Mr. Chen Duo, 54, a Dafa practitioner from Shantou City, Guangdong Province, was kidnapped by officers of the Jinsha Police Station on May 15, 2003. On May 26, he was sent to the Shantou City Detention Center, where he was brutally beaten on numerous occasions. Chen Duo went on a hunger strike to protest his illegal detention, and the police reacted with even more brutal torture. He passed out three times from the vicious beating and was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment. On June 5, realizing that he was dying, the police hurriedly asked his family to take him home. On June 9, Chen Duo passed away due to the severe injuries. Learning of his death, the police forcibly took away the body. The police is said to have videotaped the body to use as propaganda to claim that he died because he practiced Falun Gong.

Mr. Wang Xianyou, between 55 and 57, was from Yushu City, Jilin Province. Wang Xianyou was sentenced to one year of forced labor for his belief in Falun Dafa, and was detained at the Fenjin Labor Camp in Changchun City, Jilin Province. On January 5, 2001, Wang Xianyou and other practitioners staged a hunger strike to protest prolonged detention at the labor camp and denial of visits by Dafa practitioners' families. That same day, the labor camp authorities began to force-feed the practitioners. At 8:00 P.M., Wang Xianyou died while being force-fed a saline solution.

(Clearwisdom.net) Dafa practitioner Wang Baoxian was beaten to death in the autumn of 2002 at the Fuyu Forced Labor Camp. Afterwards, police from the Tongdong Road Police Station in that area coerced his family members to write a statement saying that he died of a liver disease and not from brutal beating. If his family refused to write such a statement, Wang's child would be forbidden to attend school. Wang's family members resolutely refused. Eventually, someone from his work unit wrote the false statement.
Wang Baoxian was 42 years old and employed as an engineer at a car manufacturing factory in the city. He went to Beijing to validate the Fa in 1999. After he returned he was constantly persecuted, until the police finally tortured him to death.
The torture methods that the Fuyu Forced Labor Camp guards use on Dafa practitioners are extremely cruel. In 2002, it was said that the police there used torture devices on steadfast Dafa practitioners every day.

(Clearwisdom.net) The illness of an elderly man in Wenyang Village of the Gaozhuang Street Committee, Laiwu City, Shandong Province became aggravated after he learned that his two daughters were put into prisons for practicing Falun Gong. The bad news grieved him deeply, and he passed away shortly after hearing it.
The elderly man's third daughter, Zhang Fucui, was illegally sentenced to forced labor in 2001 for practicing Falun Gong. To avoid hurting the old man, who was in frail health, his family had not told him the news. During each birthday celebration for him, he would ask, "Why has the third daughter not shown up?" His family members would say, "She was very busy in her business. You see that this 100 Yuan is money she wanted us to bring for your birthday." The man would nod his head and did not say anything.
In May and June of 2002, the elderly man's second daughter, Falun Gong practitioner Zhang Fuxiang was illegally detained at a brainwashing center by the Laiwu City Police Department and the "610 Office."* At that time, she was taking care of her father, as well as her daughter, who was also sick. The old man kept asking everyday, "Why does the second daughter not come?" His family again made up some excuses to cover up the real situation, "She is very busy in her home..."
Later Zhang Fuxiang escaped from the brainwashing center. Unfortunately she was stopped and arrested along a road by the Laiwu City Police Department in September 2002. Zhang Fuxiang was also illegally sentenced to forced labor. She is now detained in the Shandong Province No. 2 Female Labor Camp in Jinan City.
Upon learning that two of his daughters had been sentenced to forced labor camps, the old man was overcome with grief. His illness became aggravated, and before long he passed away.

(Clearwisdom.net) Dafa practitioner Jiang Shilong's father-in-law's family members, whose minds were poisoned by the government lies and propaganda, reported him to the police. People from the local "610 Office,"* from the Political and Security Section and from the Kexinting Police Station ransacked his home and confiscated Dafa books and materials. At the time of the search, Jiang Shilong put a piece of paper into his mouth. The police pried his mouth open to force him spit it out, then pushed him to the ground and put a choke-hold on his neck. Jiang Shilong had difficulty breathing, yet the other police officer took a chopstick and tried to poke into Jiang's mouth. Jiang's mother cried and kneeled down, using her fingers to probe her son's mouth. The police finally stopped.
They had actually picked Mr. Jiang up at his work unit and taken him to his home for the search. He was later taken to a detention center, but the detention center refused to accept him because his body temperature was too high, a suspicious sign during this time of the SARS epidemic. The police handcuffed him and took him to the Employee Hospital of the Hunan Steel Alloy Factory and Xiang City People's Hospital for treatment of fever. After his body temperature returned to normal, police sent him to a detention center again. The detention center again measured Jiang's body temperature and it was too high. This was repeated seven or eight times.
In spite of everything, the police still locked Jiang Shilong up at the Kexinting Police Station. Later, Jiang Shilong broke away with righteous thoughts. Now he has been forced to leave home to escape the persecution and is having a difficult time.

(Clearwisdom.net) June 8th report: Chongqing University is a prestigious school with a 74-year-old history since its founding in 1929. However, during the Chinese dictator's brutal persecution against Falun Dafa, students and faculty at Chongqing University who practice Falun Gong have suffered severe persecution.
Prior to July 20, 1999, many professors, faculty members and students, including Ph.D candidates, were practicing Falun Dafa. Several practice sites were located inside the school, and the practitioners benefited physically and mentally through cultivation. The students performed extraordinarily, both academically and morally, and the faculty practitioners did their work diligently.
After 1999, pressured by the "610 Office,"* the officials from Chongqing University held brainwashing classes and forced those practitioners who persisted in Dafa practice and who had gone to Beijing to appeal to attend these classes. They illegally detained the practitioners, tried to force them to write guarantee statements, to view propaganda materials and videotapes that attack and slander Dafa. Some brainwashing classes were secretly held at the Gele Mountain. During the class, the thugs threatened the parents of the student practitioners that they would be expelled . The parents who endured numerous hardships to send their children to college were worried their children's academic career would be cut short, so they exerted pressure on the practitioners, which created tremendous psychological burdens for the students. For graduating practitioners, the school threatened them with suspending their diplomas. Under threats, intimidation, and deception, some practitioners wrote guarantee statements to give up Falun Gong against their will. Some practitioners were expelled, forced to withdraw and sent back to their hometown; others were illegally detained and sent to forced labor camps because they persisted in Dafa practice. Below are a few examples:
Mr. Yang Chengbao, class of 1998; College of Business Administration in District A; hometown: Shandong Province. He was twice held at the Baiheling Detention Center. Later, school officials expelled him and sent him back to his hometown. Because of the threats made by the local police, the villagers didn't allow him to enter, fearing implication. He was forced to leave his hometown and go from place to place to avoid the persecution.
Mr. Lu Zhen, class of 1997; College of Business Administration in District A; hometown: Shandong Province. He was twice held at the Baiheling Detention Center and later expelled from school. He was arrested when posting Dafa truth-clarification materials and sent to forced labor camp.
Mr. Wang Zangkun, District A; hometown: Neijiang, Sichuan Province. He was held at the Baiheling Detention Center because he went to Beijing to appeal and was expelled from school.
Ms. Wang Lei, graduate student from the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, District B; hometown: Chongqing City. She was forcibly sent to a brainwashing class because she went to Beijing to appeal. Following her graduation, she was deprived of her opportunity to teach at the school.
Ms. Wu Jie, class of 1996, from the College of Architecture and Urban Planning in District B; hometown: Hainan Province. She was held at the Baiheling Detention Center and sent to brainwashing classes frequently because she persisted in Dafa practice and went to Beijing to appeal. Her scholarship was cancelled. She was forced to withdraw from school in 2000. She applied for re-admission, but the school officials ordered her to write an application statement "according to their requirements", then they would only issue her a certificate of incompletion. Wu Jie refused the unreasonable demand to write things against her conscience, so her academic career has come to a halt.
Ms. Mi Xiaozheng, class of 1996, from the College of Architecture and Urban Planning in District B; hometown: Hebei Province. She was an outstanding student after she practiced Dafa and earned top grades in her class. She was forcibly sent to a brainwashing class because she went to Beijing to appeal and persisted in Dafa practice. Her scholarship was withdrawn. She was suspended from school in 2000. At that time the school authorities ordered her not to tell anyone about her persecution. Even now, these school officials claim "no reform, no school." Mi Xiaozheng's schoolwork has been delayed for nearly three years.
Both Wu Jie and Mixiaozheng have already completed four years of college work, and they only need one more year to graduate.
Mr. Mei Guinan, class of 1997, from the College of Architectural Engineering in District B; hometown: Jiangxi Province. He was twice sent to a brainwashing class because he persisted in Dafa practice and went to Beijing to appeal. His scholarship was cancelled. When he awaited a job after graduation, the school transferred him and his residence registration to his hometown, so the school would not be affected by Jiang's implication policy. School security division chief Zhou told the local police that Mei couldn't find a job after graduation and so was sent to his hometown for a work assignment. Before Mei Guinan left school, Li, party secretary of the College of Architectural Engineering said to him happily, "From now on, you don't have anything to do with the school. I can eat and sleep well now."
Mr. Zhang Zhihu, class of 1997, from the College of Architectural Engineering in District B; hometown: Xinjiang Province. He was arrested and held at the Baiheling Detention Center, and was sent to brainwashing classes frequently because he went to Beijing to appeal. Later, he was sent to the Xishanping Labor Camp in Chongqing City. It was learned that he suffered a nervous breakdown after being subjected to inhuman torture and was "reformed." The school claims that Zhang was permitted to return to school and they are providing him medical treatment, but in reality the school has placed him under surveillance around the clock.
Professors and teachers who persisted in Dafa practice at Chongqing University were demoted and stripped of their Party membership. Some were even sent to labor camps. Teachers who were illegally sent to forced labor include Mr. Zhang Yougao, Mr. Gu Jiushou, Ms. Gao Zhongying.
Professor Zhang Yougao, 64, was a senior engineer and optical electronics scientist. He was a group leader for a scientific project for the Three Gorges Dam. He was given the "outstanding worker" award several times. He was sent to the Baiheping Detention Center and brutally tortured for several months because he went to Beijing to appeal. He was subsequently abducted and sent to the Xishanping Labor Camp, where he was tortured for one year. His story was reported on Clearwisdom.net. After his term had expired, the labor camp authorities illegally extended it by six months. After he was released, the school officials sent him to a brainwashing class held by the local government under instructions from the "610 Office." Police then abducted him again. His home was ransacked, and he was detained at the Chongqing University Police Station.
Mr. Gu Jiushou, 64, is an engineer at Chongqing University. He was illegally detained and sent to forced labor because he went to Beijing to appeal. At the labor camp he was brutally tortured. On around May 9, 2003, police broke into Gu Jiushou's home, and abducted Gu and his wife Lei Xiaorong. They also ransacked the couple's home.
The above are only a few of the examples of the persecution.

Beijing Women's Labor Camp, formerly known as Xin'an Labor Camp, used to have 7 divisions. Since Dafa disciples detained in the 2nd division joined together to oppose the brainwashing, that division was dismissed. About 700 Dafa disciples are now being held illegally in the remaining six divisions, and the majority of them are residents of Beijing.
A special unit was established in Beijing Women's Labor Camp to persecute determined Dafa disciples after all other means of torture had been unable to make them yield. The police in this unit issued orders to collaborators (former Dafa practitioners who have turned against Dafa under torture and pressure) and drug addicts that "any means can be used. As long as there is no death caused by your beating, we will back you up. We will reduce your terms for any successful brainwashing." In this "enforced team" (as the special unit is known) each practitioner receives only meager rations of corn bread each day. Sleep deprivation, brutal beatings and electric shocks are among the tortures used most.
The following are some Dafa disciples who are illegally detained and tortured in the "enforced team":
Zhang Yijie, over 40 years old, is a Beijing Dafa disciple. She used to be a division director in the Foreign Economic Trade Ministry. In 2002, her detention was illegally extended by 10 months. Zhang was isolated from others all the time. The police ordered that no one should speak to her, nor look her in the eyes. They assigned three drug-addicts to take turns keeping an eye on her.
Li Yunying, over 50 years old, is also a Beijing Dafa disciple. This is the second time for her to be detained. The police also isolated her from others and assigned three drug-addicts to take turns keeping an eye on her.
Zhang Guiling, over 40 years old, is a Beijing Dafa disciple who lives in Chaoyang District. In December 2000, her detention was illegally extended by 10 months. The police dragged her back and forth on the floor, and beat her. In the freezing winter of at least 10 degrees Celsius below zero, she was forced to stay outdoors.
Chen Fengxian, a 52-year old Beijing Dafa disciple, is a Russian translator. In the freezing winter of at least 10 degrees below zero, she was forced to stay outdoors for 7 days.
Li Xiaofeng is a Beijing Dafa disciple, the Division 2 sent her to the "enforced team."
Gui Rongfen, about 40 years old, is a Dafa disciple from Hebei Province. She was illegally kidnapped and taken to a labor camp for going to Tiananmen for Fa-rectification. Due to long time electric shocking and burning, her body was deformed. Her face was scorched and swollen, and it is now hard to recognize. Since Gui arrived at the labor camp, whenever she had the opportunity to step out of the confinement room, she called out with all her strength, "Falun Dafa is good!" The police and collaborators brutally beat her for this, but nothing could stop Gui. So later on they had to give up. In order to deceive her, The police in the labor camp even wrote to her in the name of her daughter.
Lu Kuan is in her 30s, and her term was illegally extended by 10 months.
Liu Chunrong, a pharmacist in her 50s, is a Beijing Dafa disciple. Liu once held a hunger strike for several months. The police brutally tortured her everyday by cruel force-feeding. Later she was transferred to another place, and nobody knew her whereabouts.
Wang Shuhua, a lady in her 50s, used to be in the Division 4. She did not yield to the police at all, and refused to wear the prison uniform. She appealed by not eating and not drinking, so the police tortured her by force-feeding her everyday. Later, she was transferred to another place, and her whereabouts are unknown.
Liu Shuhua, a lady in her 30s, is a Dafa disciple from Shandong Province. The police persecuted her until she suffered a mental collapse. She was later transferred, and her whereabouts are unknown.
Gong Ping is a Dafa disciple from Northeast China. Her husband is also a Dafa disciple, who is illegally detained in the Tuanhe Male Forced Labor Camp in Beijing.
The "enforced team" consists of the following policewomen:
Head: Chai Guohong
Assistant head: Liu Xiuying, Zhao Lijun, Zhang Dongmei, Wu Qingya, Ding Xiuqin,
Zhang Qian, Jin Xiu.

(Clearwisdom.net) At the end of June 2002, the Hebei Province TV station produced a program claiming that the No.5 team of the Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp of Baoding City treats Falun Gong practitioners gently in order to "transform" them. A team leader named Ma Li said that she held rice bowls in front of Falun Gong practitioners on hunger strikes, trying to persuade them to take food, claiming that she would not even treat a family member in the same way, etc.
But what are she and the labor camp really like? Inmates of the No.5 team called Ma "a professional killer." Her brutality toward Falun Gong practitioners is well known to everyone in the labor camp. She shocked an elderly Falun Gong practitioner's feet with an electric baton, badly mutilating them. Although young, she was promoted numerous times, receiving credit for persecuting Falun Gong practitioners.
How did this small forced-labor camp became so well-known across the country? The No. 5 team, which was designated to detain Falun Gong practitioners, had new buildings built one after another. In order to enhance its police force, it recruited many temporary staff, who did their utmost to physically and mentally abuse practitioners. The only reason it has become so famous lies in the fact that it is infamous for torturing and mistreating Falun Gong practitioners.
Many Falun Gong practitioners who remained steadfast to Dafa in other places were transferred to the No.5 team in the Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp. There are two special approaches being utilized here: one is brutal physical torture, and the other is to use lies from former practitioners who had turned against Dafa and policemen to deceive the practitioners. These two methods were jointly adopted here, and this camp was deemed to be the "No. 1 transformation camp in the country".
The cruel punishments from Gaoyang forced-labor camp include:
The practitioners are forced to squat down in one position for a long time and not allowed to stand up. Sometimes, a practitioner is forced to remain in that position for an entire day. In some cases the practitioner is handcuffed in that position for weeks, and if he tried to move without permission, the police would shock him with an electric baton or beat him.
The practitioners are locked in the warehouse at the back of No.5 team's facilities, then tied to stakes nailed into the ground with both arms outstretched. The practitioners are left to squat or sit, not allowed to move or lie down at night. If a practitioner nods off, he is shocked by electric batons or beaten.
There are electric batons everywhere in the forced labor camp. The staff not only shock Dafa practitioners themselves, but also instigate inmates to shock Dafa practitioners as well. Especially during forced brainwashing sessions, several electric batons are used at the same time, and some practitioners were shocked for hours. There was a veteran practitioner of over 50 years old, who was pushed down by six people. Wang Zhitai and Wang Guoyou are two policemen who sat on a couch and shocked him for more than two hours. Both his legs were covered with blisters. The room was filled with the smell of scorched flesh.
Wang Guoyou is a prison doctor who is familiar with the acupuncture points. He connects the two telephone wires to the acupuncture points, then he continues shocking the practitioner to the point of nearly making him lose consciousness. This punishment is extremely painful. Policeman Zheng Qi used this punishment against a female Dafa practitioner, who was shocked for over an hour, as she screamed in agony.
The police also use very thin rope to pull the practitioners' arms all the way to the back, until they reach the rear of head, and then tie off the ropes. This punishment can't be sustained for more than a few minutes, otherwise it would lead to both arms becoming disabled. Usually, one or two ropes are used. However, once eight ropes were used on a Dafa practitioner at the same time.
The police also use the punishment of pouring boiling water into the practitioners' mouths, burning them with cigarettes, hammering nails into their hands, inserting bamboo splints into their finger names, throwing practitioners into pits and then covering them with dirt, throwing practitioners into an enclosure for pigs, freezing them in the snow, force-feeding the practitioners by inserting pipes into their noses twice a day, beating practitioners and slapping them with shoe bottoms, extremely heavy labor, etc.
The above is only a partial list of the cruel physical punishments that are administered to Dafa practitioners at Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp.
The perpetrators from the No. 5 team of the Gaoyang Forced Labor Camp include:
Male team:
No.5 team leader: Yang Zemin
Deputy team leader: Hu Chengtang
Correction officer: Duan Guizhong
Correction officer: Li Jianjun
Person in charge of administration: Zang Haili
Team leader: Liang Baoke
Team leader: Wang Zhitai
Police doctor: Wang Guoyou
Police: Zheng Qi, Li Lixing
Female team:
General Team leader: Li Yajie
Team leader: Ye Shuxian
Team leader: Ma Li

After Falun Dafa practitioner Wang Bin died of torture on September 24, 2000 (please refer to http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2000/11/16/6164.html for a previous report on his death), the Daqing City Forced Labor Camp resorted to more moderate measures in persecuting Falun Gong. Since May of 2002 however, it has again resumed using the most vicious means. Assistant Director Wang Yongxiang convinces prison inmates to persecute Dafa practitioners using brutal tactics, which are explained below: tying them up into painful positions with ropes, depriving them of sleep, forcing them to stand for long periods of time, denying them food, making them take cold showers for long periods of time, force-feeding them human excrement, cursing them, beating them, forcing them to sit on metal torture chairs, and hanging them up. The following article illustrates some of the vile means by which Dafa practitioners were persecuted.
The above account is only a small glimpse of the atrocities being committed during the persecution.

Irina Lehat, a former mechanical engineer in her 60s, considers herself
scientific-minded, but almost every morning she gathers with other Falun Gong
adherents on the boardwalk in Brighton Beach to perform the Chinese meditation
exercises, which resemble tai-chi.
Lehat, who was raised Jewish and immigrated to Brooklyn 20 years ago from
Odessa, Russia, is among the new wave of non-Chinese Falun Gong practitioners in
New York. Falun Gong, or Falun Dafa, is a spiritual movement that combines study
and exercise, and was introduced in China in 1992.
Although banned by the Beijing government in 1999 [...] Falun Gong has gained
some international popularity. Highest estimates are about 100 million
practitioners in 60 countries, according to Gail Rachlin, a spokeswoman for the
Falun Dafa Information Center in Manhattan.
One aspect that attracts non-Chinese adherents is Falun Gong's blending of
doctrine and practice, said Andrew Meyer, a professor of Asian religions at
Brooklyn College. "It is a practice that integrates the physiological, the moral
and the spiritual," he said. "All of these goals have to be pursued
simultaneously in order for any of them to be reached." Physical and emotional
benefits are the initial attraction of Falun Gong, with spirituality a secondary
concern, said Scott Lowe, professor of philosophy and religion at the University
of North Dakota who focuses on Chinese religious history. "But the very fact
that people continue doing Falun Gong with such dedication pretty much proves to
me that they're receiving some sort of spiritual benefit."
The three major principles of Falun Gong -- [...] are truthfulness, compassion
and tolerance. Although those principles are fundamental, they are hard to carry
out, said many practitioners who were interviewed.
"What you are doing is to get back to your original self," said Clearine Hunter,
who is in her 60s and was raised a Baptist. "We have been taught to accumulate,
thinking that the more we accumulate, the happier you are going to be."
Hunter, an organizer of a Falun Gong group that meets every morning in Prospect
Park, also joins a reading group twice a week in Crown Heights, where she lives.
She said the study is more important than the exercise.
"When you hear of an exercise, your mind automatically goes to losing weight,"
Hunter said. "But when I started, I learned that it was cultivating mind, body
and spirit, which is something much higher than anything. It's about teaching
you to be a good person." Initially, Lehat was taken aback by Falun Gong's
teaching to give up materialistic thoughts -- which was against her belief in
capitalism -- but, she said, "when I started to read deeper, I couldn't put it
down."
Lehat learned about Falun Gong four years ago from a Chinese acupuncturist,
Chunyan Teng of Flushing, who had been promoting the practice in her Manhattan
clinic. Chunyan was detained in 2000 during a conference in southern China on
the banned practice of Falun Gong and sentenced to three years in prison. She
was released two months ago and is now back in New York.
Falun Gong adherents here and around the world organize demonstrations and other
activities to pressure China to stop suppressing the practice. One campaign
focuses on freeing Charles Li, a Chinese-American Falun Gong adherent from
California who is serving three years in prison for sabotaging television
broadcasts.
Michele Goncalves, 31, an auditor from Monmouth County, N.J., is a regular at
pro-Falun Gong rallies in Manhattan. She was introduced to Falun Gong by a
Chinese colleague on a business trip three years ago. "I was sitting next to
her, so miserable with my gallon of coffee in the morning, and she was bubbly
and ready to go. So I said, 'Hey, what's the harm of trying a couple of
exercises?'"
She noticed benefits within two weeks, Goncalves said. "All the stress just
seemed to pour out of my body... Now, I get up and I am ready to go."
Equally important, she said she saw spiritual changes. "Whenever I am in a
conflict, or when I am having trouble with someone, before I used to be pretty
closed-minded and always blame the other person," said Goncalves, who was raised
a Christian. Through Falun Gong, Adam Montanaro, 33, a computer programmer who
lives on the Upper West Side, said he found "a grounded feeling about life."
Raised an Episcopalian, Montanaro practices Falun Gong in Central Park. "Every
day, you are looking at your shortcomings and problems and the things that you
need to improve."
The practice made dramatic change possible in his life, said Sterling Campbell,
a professional musician who has played with prominent bands such as the B-52's
and Soul Asylum, as well as touring with David Bowie last year. "I smoked pot
and two packs of cigarettes a day," he said. "I was extremely depressed and
could not function socially without downing a bottle."
During a walk five years ago in Manhattan's Riverside Park, he said he found
Falun Gong. "After 21/2 to three weeks, those addictions just went away," he
said. He said he was drawn to the practice partly because it is free and has no
temple or obligation. "It's about redefining yourself constantly and doing
better," said Campbell, who attended Catholic schools but said he did not
embrace the religion. Through Falun Gong, "I just became a more considerate,
selfless person."
Software developer Scott Chinn, 33, is a self-described "hardcore-science guy"
who thought science could explain everything. "I don't like people just to tell
me things, and I just believe in them," he said. "I read things, and I try to
apply them."
Introduced to Falun Gong by a longtime Chinese friend almost three years ago,
Chinn, who lives on the Upper West Side and practices with the Central Park
group, said, "I think it's more of clarity of mind, knowing what's right and
wrong."
Agnostic until college, when he declared himself an atheist, Chinn said Western
spirituality never clicked with him. "I read the Bible and didn't understand
anything. But after I studied Falun Gong, I could understand Christianity
better. It is fundamental, and it gets to the core issues."
"You change internally. It's hard to explain, but it's little by little," said
Chinn's wife, Eliana, who is in her 30s and was raised a Catholic. "You work out
your own salvation. You change in your daily life, not just on Sunday morning
when you go to Mass."

(Clearwisdom.net) About ten scholars from the United States and the United Kingdom of British came to Hong Kong to attend the two-day forum "Freedom and National Security - Has the Right Balance Been Struck?" organized by the Hong Kong Lawyers Association, Hong Kong University, and Hong Kong Civic University. The attendees oppose Article 23, and some of them believe the proscription mechanism should be deleted.
The Legislation Committee discussed the "National Security Bill" today. Representative of the Democratic Party Martin Lee, Shen Yang, Jingshen Tu, Aiyi Wu, Huiqing Liu and others boycotted the meeting to protest the legislation and attended the "Freedom and National Security - Has the Right Balance Been Struck?" forum.
Former Hong Kong Bar Association Chairman Alen Leong said that many regulations in the draft legislation were beyond the scope of Article 23, and he didn't support the legislation. Xianming Tang, representing the security department in the forum, replied that the government saw the need of regulations, so they were inserted into the legislation. Another scholar contended that any given law has its own scope and cannot be extended arbitrarily.
Representative of the Justice Department Mr. James O'Neil also made a number of blunders. When it was time for questions from the audience, Martin Lee asked the two government officials why the draft sometimes uses "the People's Republic of China" and sometimes uses "My Majesty". It was not just a matter of consistency but also an insult to China.
James O'Neil replied that the Hong Kong Bar Association once said it would "rather do one thing less than do one thing more." Changing all the terms was a big project that didn't conform to this principle. Current Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association Mr. Jinsheng Chen immediately pointed out that he was twisting the words. He said that in writing legislation the terms must be consistent, and has nothing to do with doing more or doing less.

HONG KONG - Six years after China regained sovereignty over this former British colony, a bitter clash is taking place between the government and human-rights activists over Hong Kong's future as an outpost of freedom.
Under pressure from the mainland, Hong Kong's government intends to implement a controversial package of national security laws early next month to deal with treason, subversion, sedition and state secrets.
Backed by strong support from pro-Beijing loyalists in Hong Kong's largely unelected legislative council, the government seems certain of victory.
But a showdown is looming over the dispute, which remained at a low boil while people were distracted by the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome.
Now, with SARS in decline, this territory's political temperature is rising fast over the proposals.
For a territory that proudly calls itself the Special Autonomous Region of Hong Kong, the issue of autonomy from the mainland cuts to the heart of its international image and domestic status.
Critics warn the new laws will harm Hong Kong's reputation as a protector of human rights and scare away business investment.
But Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa insists he will not be deterred from passing the legislation, which he considers part of the unfinished business of the handover.
Article 23 of the Basic Law, or Hong Kong's mini-constitution, stipulates that Hong Kong must at some future point "enact laws on its own" to safeguard state security.
The provision was inserted by China after protests erupted in Hong Kong over the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.
Suspicions toward Beijing persist: At a candlelit vigil here marking the 14th anniversary of the June 4 bloodbath, an estimated 50,000 people turned out to raise the alarm over Article 23.
The backlash threatens to rain on a July 1 parade marking the anniversary of the handover.
Human-rights and pro-democracy activists are predicting more than 100,000 people will take to the streets against the national security laws in what could be the biggest political march since the mid-1997 transition to Chinese rule.
"The government has ignored public opinion over Article 23 and has become the enemy of the people," says Richard Tsoi, an organizer for the Civil Human Rights Front, which is organizing the protest march with 40 member groups.
An opinion poll released this month by the City University of Hong Kong showed 58 per cent of respondents oppose the package.
Among the most controversial proposals are restrictions to be placed on organizations deemed to be linked with those banned on the mainland, such as the Falun Gong meditation movement [...]
Sensing that the government won't be deterred, opposition politicians are appealing for support from foreign governments, including Canada, to prevail upon Hong Kong's leadership.
Martin Lee, founder of the opposition Democratic party, has just returned from a lobbying swing in the United States.
On Friday, he met privately with Canada's consul-general in Hong Kong to press his case.
"This government is going to ignore all opposition, no matter how strong and how cogent our arguments," Lee said in an interview before the meeting.
But he added that "Tung thinks it's important for Hong Kong to remain in the good books of foreign governments and keep its international image."
Lee urged Canada to recall the 1984 Sino-British agreement to maintain Hong Kong's independent legal and political systems for 50 years after the hand-over.
"Had you (Canada) known then that our freedom would last only six years, how would your government have responded?" Lee asked.
Canadian Consul-General Tony Burger said in a later interview that Canada is assessing whether to make any public comments in the coming weeks.
In a statement last fall, the Canadian government warned pointedly that the proposed laws would have to conform with international rights treaties and protect freedom of expression.
What has caught many people by surprise is that an abstract debate over political freedoms here has turned into a real-life argument about life-and-death issues in the wake of the SARS scare.
People are asking whether the national security laws, if they'd been in place, might have deterred the local media from the aggressive reporting that helped bring the virus to public attention.
In southern China, where the virus originated, a Communist party cover-up and a media blackout allowed the virus to spread across the border to Hong Kong and, ultimately, to Toronto.
Now, Hong Kong's experience with SARS weighs heavily on its future. If another viral outbreak emerged on the eve of Beijing's 2008 Olympics, Lee argues, China might declare it a "state secret" and intimidate the media into silence with the new laws in place.
"It's possible," he says, for the media "to fall afoul of the law" in such a scenario.
That threat has alarmed the Hong Kong Journalists Association, which published a report this month warning that "draconian powers of search and seizure" will cast a chill on local media.
The group's president, Mak Yin-ting, cautions that the national security laws "are an inducement to self-censorship; they may also irrevocably change the way we practise journalism in Hong Kong."
The government insists the national security laws will be little different from those on the books of other Western countries that have Official Secrets acts and outlaw treason or sedition.
The difference, however, is that those countries enjoy the checks and balances of democratic government that are not present in Hong Kong or mainland China.
Unlike Canadians, the people of Hong Kong can't turf out their government at the next election if it tramples on civil liberties or muzzles the media.
Beijing, meanwhile, is clearly running out of patience. Chinese President Hu Jintao and his top adviser on Hong Kong affairs, Tang Jiaxuan, said this month that Article 23 is a litmus test of national sovereignty.
"How can we not do it?" Tang asked reporters on a trip to Mongolia with Hu. "Otherwise, what's the meaning of Hong Kong's return (to China)?"
Hong Kong's secretary for security, Regina Ip, also has argued that the package is intended only to prevent the violent overthrow of the government and will not be abused.
"The entire debate illustrates a very severe clash of identity and a political cleavage in Hong Kong," says political scientist Sonny Lo of the University of Hong Kong. "Beijing will retain the final say on how to tackle dissidents in Hong Kong, so the situation will be like a sword hanging over their heads."
If, as expected, the bill becomes law next month, it will be "another step toward the mainlandization of Hong Kong politics," he says.
But rather than buying stability for Beijing by giving stronger police powers to Hong Kong's government, Lo predicts that Article 23 will energize the opposition into demanding a more democratic system here.

By early this month, the number of SARS infections and deaths were clearly falling in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. This is good news, but people are still amazed at how China dealt with the SARS epidemic.
At a news conference called by the press office of China's State Council on May 30, when Vice Minister of Health Gao Qiang was asked by a UPI journalist whether former minister of health Zhang Wenkang and former Beijing mayor Meng Xuenong, both removed for covering up the true extent of the SARS epidemic, would receive any punishment, his reply was, "First of all, I don't agree with this journalist that Comrade Zhang was removed because he concealed the SARS epidemic. The Chinese government has not concealed the epidemic."
And when a journalist from the Hong Kong paper Wenwei Po asked him what he thought of Jiang Yanyong, the doctor who revealed the cover-up of the epidemic to Time magazine, and also inquired about Jiang's situation, Gao replied, "I don't understand why everyone is so interested in Professor Jiang Yanyong. We believe that China has fended off SARS thanks to national mobilization and reliance on scientific methods, mass prevention and group control under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese government. ... There are 6 million medical professionals and health workers in China. Jiang Yanyong is but one of them."
If Zhang, Meng and the Chinese government did not cover up the epidemic, then I don't know the reason why they were removed from their posts. Meng himself admitted that the disease was discovered in Beijing on March 1, and that it was not announced because of the ongoing National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, so it seems he was fabricating facts.
At the time, media around the world were praising the new Chinese leadership for being "pragmatic" and increasing transparency. They even thought it was the beginning of Chinese reforms and Hong Kong media applauded till their hands bled.
But it was all a misunderstanding. China had tricked the whole world, and not just the general public. Even US President George W. Bush called Chinese President Hu Jintao to declare his support, and he also heaped praise on Hu at the recent G8 summit. Bush appeared to have been duped, too.
But the Xinhua News Agency deleted these public statements by Gao, and Bush's praise for Hu was manipulated to sound like praise for the Chinese government. With China's official media daring to openly block and manipulate information, I can't see where the "transparency" would be coming from, or how this could be the beginning of reform.
To show that Jiang, respected as a hero by the public, was not being persecuted and still enjoyed his freedom, China's mouthpieces concocted an interview with him. Some people all along suspected it to be made up to placate the foreign media. As suspected, it was a fake, because, just as Gao said, there are 6 million medical workers in China, so how could the media be so interested in this particular person? This also highlights the Chinese media's lack of public credibility.
The reason Jiang was not allowed by Chinese authorities to travel to the US was obviously his rumor-mongering, since China never concealed the epidemic.
It seems Zhang and Meng's removal from their posts was an act of expediency aimed at allaying public anger, especially in other affected nations. Now that they see the epidemic receding, the CCP once again makes itself out to be infallible. Thus the Chinese delegation to the World Health Assembly did not apologize to Taiwan, to which China has brought harm. Not only that, but it also made it seem as if Taipei was indebted to Beijing.
The Cultural Revolution tore the country apart and impoverished the people, causing the nation to seethe with discontent. The party has since acknowledged its responsibility for the mistakes during the Cultural Revolution, Mao Zedong's mistakes during his later years and even reversed cases of "unjust persecution" that had occurred since the party established political power.
But now there is a slight improvement in China's economic situation, and immediately it begins to behave as if it were rich and powerful, no longer acknowledging these mistakes but instead applying cruel pressure on the members of the 1989 student movement. The Anti-rightist Campaign, the Cultural Revolution, the Great Famine, Mao's mistakes and so on may not be studied or discussed. In short, these events have nothing to do with the CCP, which has always been mighty, glorious and correct.
Because it acted as if it were opening up, the US signed three joint communiqués with Beijing. China, however, all along looked on the US as an "enemy power," time and again using the communiqués to pressure the US.
Little more than half a year has gone by since the eruption and spread of SARS. The fact that China wants to move on and forget the past even before the bodies of those who have died from the disease are cold should be a good lesson to the world and Taiwan. Regrettably, China's continued lies have not been attacked. It is certain to continue lying, harming the world and poisoning humanity, while we can only stand by and suffer the consequences of our own inaction.

(Clearwisdom.net) I obtained Dafa in March of 1997. Since then, six years have passed. During those years I have walked a tough and bumpy road. Everything that has happened during those six years is still vivid in my mind. In order to share with fellow practitioners, I have decided to write about the events. I hope this can help us to improve together.
Before I practiced Falun Dafa, I was known as a sickly person. I was ill throughout my body. In particular, the gynecological disease I suffered from made me unable to live without Chinese medicines. My face was always swollen and sallow, and I had a very bad temper. Soon after I began practicing Falun Dafa, all my illnesses were cured and my xinxing [moral character] improved as well. My colleagues said that I had turned into a completely different person.
Study the Fa and Cultivate Xinxing
I started studying the Fa and doing the exercises in March of 1997. Shortly after, I felt that Master had purified my body. Through Fa study, I understood that cultivation practice is to cultivate one's heart. When encountering a xinxing test or difficulties in the workplace I measured my behavior using Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance. My righteous behavior won me the trust and support of my supervisors and colleagues.
Steadfastly Cultivate Dafa and Follow Master Closely
After July 20, 1999, I realized that I should assist Master in the Fa-rectification. I began spreading Dafa to people around me. I clarified the truth to them by talking about my cultivation experience and telling them how Master taught us to be noble people with high morals. I helped them understand that the propaganda on TV was nothing more than rumors and slander. Through studying the Fa with a calm heart, I realized that I should go to Beijing to validate Dafa.
In December of 1999, my son and I took the train to Beijing with two other practitioners. We stood for eight straight hours on the train. Whenever there was a seat available, we gave it to other passengers. Although we stood all the way to Beijing, we didn't feel tired; instead, our bodies were light. We knew we were doing a most divine thing. The following day, as soon as we entered Tiananmen Square, we were dragged into a police car. The police slapped the faces of the fellow practitioners in the car. They also beat them and swore at them. My son wears glasses. As soon as he got into the car, he was beaten and his glasses were taken away. Later, they sent us to the local government office in Beijing. A police officer with badge number 11117179 held my son in the car. They drove back to Tiananmen Square to arrest more practitioners. On the way there they tortured my son brutally. The policemen forced him to kneel down, put his head under the back seat and then they beat his hips. The jeans he wore were ripped; there were three long tears. They also stood on his back and trampled him. They asked him whether he would continue to practice. He said, "Yes." They used a piece of sheet metal to whip his face around the eyes. Then they whipped the back of his hands until they bled. They took turns beating him.
When we arrived at the local government office in Beijing, the police searched everyone. At that time, I had 500 Yuan* in my pocket. I had one thought, "I should not allow the police to take my money. The money should be used to print Dafa materials." As a result, they didn't find the money. I was detained in a room without food or water the entire day, along with other practitioners. The following morning, the police sent us to a local detention center, where we were interrogated one by one. While interrogating my son, they kicked him so hard that he fell to the ground. They slapped his face, and later detained him for 15 days. The neighborhood community people asked my husband, who doesn't practice Falun Gong, to bring 1,500 Yuan as a release fee. He refused. In the end, the detention center forced us to pay 375 Yuan for living expenses, and they released my son.
After I was released from detention in Beijing, the leaders at my place of work took me to the security section. I told them that it wasn't wrong to speak some good words about Falun Gong; I had gone to Beijing to restore the reputation of Falun Gong. I told them that even if they were going to fire me, I wouldn't give up practicing Falun Gong. In the end, they had to let me go home. They deducted 500 Yuan from my salary as the release fee for the detention center.
Before New Years of 2000, the neighborhood community people came to my home and wanted to take my son to the brainwashing session. My husband firmly refused.
As the Fa-rectification process progressed, many practitioners went to Tiananmen Square and the appeal offices to speak on behalf of Dafa. After sharing experiences with other practitioners, I decided to go to the appeals office also.
Doing Without Pursuit
In June 2000, my son and I went to Beijing again. As soon as we arrived in Beijing, we mailed a letter to the premier. I said to Master, "Master, I have come here to appeal. I would never cooperate with the evil." Upon arriving at the State Appeals Office, we saw police sitting on both sides of the office gate. Whenever someone went up to the office, a bunch of police would come over and question them. The police could also arrest you and not allow you to appeal. At this moment, an old man from the area saw us. He approached us and said angrily, "They are all sent here from different places. Those guys are so brutal that a college student was forced to jump into the river due to their brutal beating. I also saw a police officer badly trample a woman's feet..." With Master's arrangement, we entered the gate without any problems. The Appeals Office established a special room for Falun Gong. Their purpose was not to allow us to appeal but to make arresting practitioners more convenient. We filled out a form, submitted our appeals letter and then left. Later on, a practitioner told us that after we left, the police started to call people's names on the application forms. They tore up the forms if the applicants were not present, and took the rest to local government offices, where they were sent back.
"Then, as a cultivator, you should make use of all feasible conditions to spread Dafa and validate Dafa as a correct and true science, rather than preaching or idealism--this is every cultivator's obligation." ("Validation" from Essentials for Further Advancement) Through exchanging understandings, we realized we should not wait at home. Instead, we should go out and practice the exercises to validate Dafa. So I started practicing the exercises in the park in the complex where I lived. On July 22, 2000, at 5:00 a.m., I was practicing the exercises in the park. A person in the neighborhood reported it to the police, and the police came and arrested me. At that time, many people were buying food for breakfast, so I clarified the facts to them. The police sent me to the detention center and detained me for 15 days. They also confiscated my new tape recorder. In the detention center, I didn't cooperate with them. I recited Hong Yin with other practitioners and held a hunger strike for five days. Later, our hearts were all beating abnormally. The police had to let us go home.
On November 15, 2000, my son and I went to Beijing for the third time to validate Dafa with two other practitioners. After exchanging our understandings, we enlightened to using our divine side to validate Dafa and never acknowledging the evil's arrangement. We were doing the most sacred things. We went to the Golden Water Bridge at Tiananmen Square. With the police close by, we hung banners on the bridge. My son hung his banner on the fence beside the street since we had lost track of each other. With Master's help, we all returned home safely.
After we returned from Beijing, we continued doing truth-clarifying work, distributing flyers, and telling the facts to people around us. We wanted them to learn about Falun Gong and awaken to the lies.
As time passed, I became more and more brave, but developed the attachment of zealotry. One day after the Lantern Festival of 2001 (Feb. 7, 2001), I was distributing flyers about the self-immolation. A policeman followed me and later took me to the detention center. The following day, my father passed away but they didn't allow me to go home. My son went to the detention center and asked them to release me. They set two conditions for my release. First, they said that I needed to write a letter guaranteeing that I would not practice Falun Gong. Second, they said we would have to pay a huge amount of money in fees. My son denied their requests. They then went through the procedures for criminal detention very quickly and sent me to the criminal detention center. I was detained for a month. During the detention, I held a hunger strike for two days. The officials there force-fed me twice. One time I couldn't even breathe during the force-feeding. Also, a policeman violently kicked me in the leg.
In the detention center, I clarified the truth about the self-immolation to the director. I also clarified the truth to prisoners. The detention center had not detained many Falun Gong practitioners. Fellow practitioners had spread Dafa to the director and prisoners. They all knew about Falun Gong to differing extents. During my hunger strike, the local police station sent two collaborators [former Falun Gong practitioners who have gone astray due to brainwashing and torture] to brainwash me. I didn't listen to them at all. Seeing that their work was useless, they left gloomily. I recited Master's articles "Mighty Virtue" and "Melt into the Fa." When the police officers attempted to videotape me while interrogating me, I refused. In the detention center, some of my attachments were exposed, and I also found that I hadn't enlightened to many things. I realized that I needed to study the Fa more while clarifying the truth, as well as get rid of the bad stuff through my cultivation.
One day in April 2001, about 9:00 p.m., police officials from the detention center came to my home to take me to a brainwashing session. They didn't succeed in breaking in. Two police officers stayed on the stairs for two days and still were not able to arrest me. Shortly after that, I left home and went from place to place to avoid further persecution. But I continued to do the truth-clarifying work.
In May of 2001, a policeman found me reading Zhuan Falun on the train. He searched my bag and found truth-clarifying flyers. He took me to a room and questioned me. I then promoted Dafa, and clarified the truth to him and the others in the room. Afterwards, they sent me to a railway police station that was on the way. The police officers there asked my name and where I was from. I didn't answer their questions but clarified the truth to them. I recited Mater's scripture, "No matter what the situation, do not cooperate with the evil's demands, orders, or what it instigates" ("Dafa Disciples' Righteous Thoughts are Powerful" from Essentials for Further Advancement II.) The police were changed one after another, some being more vicious than others. When they asked what my name was, I answered "Dafa disciple." I kept reciting Master's scriptures. Their viciousness disappeared little by little. The power of Dafa is great. Master said, "...because those so-called evil beings are in fact nothing" ("The Effects of Righteous Thoughts" from Essentials for Further Advancement II.) I was detained for only one day.
The following day, they transferred me to a city police station and continued to interrogate me. I continued to recite Master's scriptures in my mind and asked them to release me unconditionally. With Master's help, I left through the door of the police station.
On September 26, 2001, three plain-clothes policemen from the district police station broke into my home in an attempt to arrest me. By then, I had already left home. Later, my husband was forced to leave home and join me.
Clarify the Truth and Offer Salvation
It has been two years since I left home . Master says, "Every person you come into contact with in society is someone to clarify the truth to, and what's manifest in clarifying the truth is Dafa disciples' mercy and their salvation of the world's people" ("To All Students at the Nordic Fa Conference" from Essentials for Further Advancement II.) I went to the markets in rural areas to distribute truth-clarifying flyers. I also distributed flyers and CDs on street corners in rural areas. I told them the truth about Falun Gong face to face. With a smile on my face, I handed flyers and CDs to them. There were many good-hearted people who asked me to be careful. Every time I went out, I took some flyers and CDs so that I could clarify the truth at any time. I concentrated on quality, not quantity. I tried my best to offer salvation to people. If I ran out of flyers, I clarified the truth still, telling them about the miracle of Dafa as well as the change in my body and mind after I began practicing. I told them Master was slandered and the propaganda on TV was full of lies. Wherever I went, that was the place to clarify the truth. I didn't want to miss any opportunity.
Once, after a driver of a three-wheeler heard the truth, he said, "Falun Gong practitioners are good people. Look what Jiang did to this country! They arrest good people but let bad people go free. They are really evil. When your Master comes back, we will all go to welcome him." There was a woman who made her living by selling tickets. After she heard the truth, she told her co-workers, "Please let her tell us more." Her clear side was really anxious and she was waiting for us to save them. After a vender who sold fruits saw the CD, he said, "Now I know the real story of the self-immolation." In my daily life, I clarified the truth everywhere, all the time. Clarifying the truth became part of my life. In doing so, many people became my friends.
There was a small grocery in the complex I lived in. People working there all knew the truth. Once, when I was detained in the local police station, a lady and her son went to the station and tried to bring me coats and shoes. She said to the police, "Why do you arrest good people? She is a good person."
Make Good Use of the Time to Clarify the Truth
Since Master's "Hurry Up And Tell Them" article was published, I felt the urgency and Master's boundless compassion. The time Master extends is to create opportunities for us. We should treasure every day.
I decided to go to my hometown to clarify the truth. I bought two VCD players and brought some truth-clarifying materials and CDs with me. I told the facts about Falun Gong to my brothers and sisters, and let them read the materials and watch the CDs. My oldest sister said after seeing the CD, "I believe everything you have said is true."
Master said, "Cherish the present time and make the best use of it--this time is meant for the disciples." ("Teaching the Fa at the Washington, D.C. International Fa Conference"). I realized that the spring festival is a good time to clarify the truth. On the first day of the lunar calendar year of 2003, we took banners and greeting cards with truth-clarifying CDs inside with us and distributed them to people on the streets. Whenever we saw a person, we said "Happy New Year! This is a greeting card for you." They all accepted it. Along the way, we distributed greeting cards, put up posters and hung banners. Later, we distributed flyers in a building complex and didn't go home until five o'clock. That day was very fruitful.
As SARS appeared, I felt the urgency to offer salvation to people. Now people are becoming more and more clear-headed, so it is easier to clarify the truth to them. While I was distributing the flyers, they asked, "Is it about Falun Gong? If it is, I want to have it." I told them "Yes" and continued saying, "Be a good person. Support kindness and justice. Remember in your heart 'Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance' and you will be safe. Heaven is very fair and knows who's good and who's not."
My experience is that it is easy to speak the truth face to face. People will understand after you talk to them. I also encountered some people who refused to take the flyers. I said, "Take a look, then you will know what Falun Gong is about. Don't just listen to the one-sided propaganda on TV. Learning the truth is good for you. We do this for your well-being. I have brought this for you. Why don't you just take a look?" In the end, they took it and even told me to be careful.
During the Fa-rectification, I have felt the miracle and power of Dafa as long as I take the Fa as my teacher. With righteous thoughts and actions, I have distributed flyers to many people. I need to study the Fa more to correct the shortcomings in my clarifying the truth, rectify myself, and get rid of the bad stuff in my mind. I will do the three things well and not let Master down. I will try even harder to accomplish the sacred mission endowed by Master -- assisting Master to rectify the Fa.
Please correct me if there is anything incorrect in my understanding.

Throughout my cultivation I had been bothered by a question, that is, why I did not do well in certain areas? I was working hard at that time, wasn't I? I did not give up, did I? Why did I not overcome the obstacle? Only until recently did I understand why. I wrote it down in order to share my cultivation experience with all of you.
We all have a habit of forming a definition and conclusion about things in our society. Whenever a situation develops, we would first try to either approve or disapprove, whether it is a person, an object or some issue. After we have affirmed our thoughts then we would pursue the situation based on this understanding. In fact we have confined and limited ourselves by such a mentality. Even if we try harder later on, we would have already been framed by this "spontaneous thought" and unable to transcend it (because we could not realize early on that we could rise above it), ending up unable to perform well in some areas. More seriously, many of us could not recognize that the failure was the result of this "spontaneous thought," and could not realize it. On the contrary, we would make the excuse that the tribulations were very immense and the persecution was severe. This is very misleading and confusing, with devastating effects.
Once I was detained at the county detention center and a policeman coerced me to sign a "repentance paper." What was my "spontaneous thought" at that moment? "If I do not sign it, chances are they will detain me." Yet the Fa had clearly told us and I also knew from my heart, never to cooperate with the evil. I also tried to reason with them and asked them to be fair. Yet being influenced by this "spontaneous thought" my strength was not adequate. I even felt that my own will to stand up against them was lacking. Yet afterwards I comforted myself that I had clarified the truth to them, and I stood up against the persecution... and it was over just like that.
Later on I repeatedly pondered it and suddenly realized that all the tribulations were caused by that "spontaneous thought." At that moment I recalled Teacher's words in "Zhuan Falun," "We have said that good or evil comes from a person's spontaneous thought, and the thought at that moment can bring about different consequences."
Therefore, it is critical that our "spontaneous thought" is always based on the Fa. Especially as we are at the final phase of the Fa- rectification, we are constantly facing the final resistance from the evil old forces, as well as interference from the human elements of practitioners. Thus, it is crucial to purify our thoughts.
We must measure everything with the standard set by Dafa, because we are beings created by Dafa. Whether it's now or in the future, safeguarding Dafa and maintaining Dafa's standards is our sacred mission and obligation. "No matter what happens, one must maintain good xinxing. Only through adhering to Dafa can one be truly right." (Zhuan Falun). Teacher also said, "How was the cosmos created? It was created just by a Great Fa Enlightened Being's one thought." ("Teaching the Fa at the 2002 Fa Conference in Philadelphia, U.S.A.") Hence, we must seize the time that we have now to cultivate ourselves to be pure, to be noble, and to reach Consummation.
What I have written here was only my own understanding and I hope it will be of value to my fellow practitioners. Because I am limited by my level of understanding, please kindly point out anything inappropriate.

Over a Dozen Thugs Find Themselves Locked Inside a House
In a certain area in northeastern China, the police and street officials worked together to illegally arrest Dafa practitioners to send them to brainwashing classes. Almost all the Dafa practitioners in the area were arrested with the exception of one practitioner, who was an older lady. The police were determined to arrest her.
At about five in the morning, this practitioner opened the main door of her yard. A group of policemen and street officials came forward, laughing wildly, "This time we've got you!" She did not panic but smiled calmly, "You all came so early in the morning, it is really hard on you! Come in, have a seat." After waiting for them to enter the house one after another, the practitioner, who stayed behind them, took the padlock and quickly locked the door from the outside. The police and the street officials were locked inside the house. No matter how they roared and banged on the door, the practitioner ignored them and calmly walked away.
Escaping from Danger with Righteous Thoughts
On the night of May 24, 2003, seven Dafa practitioners from an urban area were hanging up banners in the countryside. The banners read, "Falun Dafa is Good" and "Falun Dafa is the Righteous Fa." After they hung up more than twenty banners and were preparing to leave, the police on patrol discovered them. The patrol tried to block their way and arrest them. The Dafa practitioners divided themselves into three groups. One group directly interacted with the police patrol, another group sent forth righteous thoughts, and the last group called other practitioners to send forth righteous thoughts together. With their coordinated efforts, the Dafa practitioners managed to return safely.

Phone calls from overseas practitioners cause a great shock to the police stations and public security offices. The police are so frightened that they block the news, and even dare not let their authorities and other people know about these overseas phone calls. Some police are very puzzled and ask: "How do they know my phone number?" Some police are afraid that their home phone numbers are known by overseas Dafa practitioners.
We know that many policemen did not know the truth about Dafa and the lawsuits against Jiang in other countries. Recently, officers at one police station in charge of my area were shaken up after receiving an overseas phone call from a Dafa practitioner.
(Clearwisdom.net) Everything that happened and is happening in this world has something to do with the Fa. At the moment, the old forces use the excuse of preventing SARS from returning to block the entrances to all the residential areas and demand that every resident have a pass. From May 20 to June 10, Beijing authorities required that everyone from other areas and everyone who rents must register. This has brought a lot of interference to our Fa-rectification cultivation and clarifying the truth. It is a subject for every Dafa disciple to think about and consider how to improve our understanding of the Fa and do a better job clarifying the truth.
Master said, "It's not me who's doing this--it's the old forces weeding people out." ("Lecturing on and Explaining the Fa at the Metropolitan New York Fa Conference") It is obvious that the old forces arranged the epidemic and all the means for the so-called "SARS prevention." We must clearly understand this from the principles of the Fa, completely deny any arrangements that obstruct Fa-rectification, and eliminate all the interference that they bring to Fa-rectification.
Looking at it from another angle, could it be our attachments that brought such interference to Fa-rectification? In the past four years, many practitioners have left their homes due to the evil persecution. They have been working steadily to save people and know not to cooperate with the evil. But many other practitioners feel quite passive and helpless about having to leave their homes. Some of them even took leaving their home as being natural. Whenever there was a piece of news about "searching" or "checking for IDs" their minds were perturbed. We must understand from the Fa, that it is the evil persecution that forced us to leave our homes, and that we must oppose it from our hearts. Of course, we can validate the Fa in all circumstances. But think about it, had we not been forced to leave our homes, we would be able to do a better job in saving people.
Although we have been forced to leave our homes and have to move often, we ought to be above-board. There is no place to hide our attachments. Yet the attachments can obstruct us. "No human attachment can be taken to heaven." (Guiding the Voyage - Teaching the Fa at the Western U.S. Fa Conference) We are creating the path for the people of the future to cultivate and to become gods. People of the future cannot lose their homes to cultivate. "The cosmos in the future can't have any deviation and errors because we had gaps during the Fa-rectification. So it's important for us to walk each and every step well during our own validating the Fa." ("Lecturing on and Explaining the Fa at the Metropolitan New York Fa Conference")
Besides not cooperating with the evil, we should firmly eliminate the evil. That way we won't be so passive in our efforts to save people. Let's not wait until it brings interference to us before we start eliminating it. We don't even allow such interference to happen. How can the common, worldly requirement such as "entrance passes" and "registering" hinder Fa-rectification Dafa disciples' actions? If all Dafa disciples can take the righteous path, be above-board and immovable, could there be any excuse for the old forces to create trouble for us?
The above is my personal understanding. If it is incorrect, please kindly point it out.

My brother Li Chun and my sister-in-law Xiao Hua started to practice Falun Gong at the end of 1997.
Since Jiang started insanely persecuting Falun Dafa on July 20, 1999, Li Chun and his wife always practiced Falun Dafa openly, no matter how much pressure they faced. As a result, they were illegally detained many times.
The first time they were detained was in December 1999. The police tried to force them to write a statement saying that they would not appeal in Beijing. They firmly refused to do so. As a result, they were detained in the police station and not allowed to sleep for two days. It was winter, and they only had indoor clothes on at the time of their arrest. During the two days, they had to suffer from the cold. The policemen still tried to force them to write a statement; however, Li Chun and his wife insisted on not writing anything. Finally, the policemen had no alternative but to free them.
The second time they were detained was during the Spring Festival in 2000, when Li Chun and his wife were arrested from a practitioner's home and put in a detention center. Because Xiao Hua did the Dafa exercises there, she was hung up and tortured for three days and nights with both her hands behind her back. With her swollen hands, blue face, and black eyes, the prisoners could not tolerate it; some of them helped to massage her hands. Some of the prisoners felt so sad they could not sleep after seeing Xiao Hua's condition.
The third time the couple was arrested was in July of the same year. The policemen forced them to write another statement. Li Chun and Xiao Hua wrote about their experience while practicing Falun Dafa, and the benefits to their health. They said that Falun Dafa made people more compassionate, which benefited society and the country. They also asked the government to stop persecuting Falun Gong. As a result, they were arrested and detained for more than one month.
The fourth time they were detained was during the Spring Festival in 2001, when a Shanghai policeman intimidated Li Chun, saying, "I will beat you to the ground if you don't listen to me." Li Chun replied, "I will appeal this situation to the top leaders. If they don't care, I will appeal to the central government." Li Chun wrote an appeal letter. Later the policemen arrested Li Chun and detained him for more than a month. The policemen said that Li Chun said something he shouldn't have said, and that he wrote something he shouldn't have written.
On May 9 of this year, Li Chun was arrested again because he clarified the truth to people on the street. The policemen searched Li Chun's home from 9:00pm to 1:00am after they arrested him. At present, they are trying to collect evidence against Li Chun in an attempt to illegally sentence him. Someone told Li Chun's wife to ask for a lawyer, but she could not find any lawyers who dared to defend Falun Gong practitioners in Shanghai.
The unit that illegally detained Li Chun is:
Yangpu Substation of the Shanghai Police Department
Address: No. 2049 Pingliang Road, Yangpu, Shanghai. Zip code: 200090
Telephone switchboard number: 86-21-65431000
The department that specifically persecutes Falun Gong is the National Security
Department.

(Clearwisdom.net June 15, 2003) To support the lawsuit against Jiang and better clarify the truth of Falun Gong to people in Ohio, local practitioners held a press conference in Fountain Square at Cincinnati's center. The press conference aimed at disclosing the Jiang regime's brutal persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in the past four years, and calling upon more people to support the genocide lawsuit against Jiang, the former dictator of China. At the press conference, Falun Gong practitioners also talked about the abuse U.S. citizen Charles Li has suffered in China's jail as well the forced feeding he was subjected to. Practitioners called upon the U.S. government and people to help Charles Li regain his freedom.
At the press conference a Ph.D. candidate from the University of Cincinnati told the story of his brother Mr. Wang Weiyu, an outstanding Ph.D. candidate from Qinghua University who was forced to quit school because he practiced Falun Gong. Chinese police arrested Mr. Wang last August. His whereabouts are still unknown. He called upon people to work together to put an end to the persecution of Falun Gong, and expressed hopes that his brother could be reunited with his family soon. This student is not a Falun Gong practitioner but stepped forward for the sake of his brother.
Congressman Steve Chabot, who had been very supportive to Falun Gong, sent a letter to the press conference to express his support. He said in his letter, "I wanted to send along an expression of my support for your efforts to stop the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners by the communist dictatorship of the People's Republic of China. I especially commend you for your hard work on behalf of freedom and your efforts to gain the release of Dr. Charles Li, an American citizen currently being detained in China."
A reporter from Cincinnati's newspaper City Beat attended the press conference and took detailed notes. After the press conference he interviewed the practitioners. On the following day he called the practitioners and did an interview for over an hour. He also expressed that he would do more interviews with family members of Falun Gong practitioners being persecuted in China.

We have received the following report from practitioners in the Dominican Republic:
The practitioner replied: "This is a practice based on principles and exercises. The principles are: "Truthfulness - Compassion - Tolerance." I explained to him that he was looking at the symbol of a Falun.
Visitor: But you practice Taoism? I see the symbols of Taiji.
Practitioner: I explained to him about the principles that make up the Tao School as well as those of the Buddha School. I added that we practice a system that integrates all three principles.
Visitor: So this is a microcosm of the universe!
Practitioner: Yes, these principles truly summarize the universe and its evolution.
Later we showed the video "Return to our original true self", and one of the visitors said, "Wow! How beautiful and harmonious these exercises are!" When seeing the amount of people around the world and in China who practice, and the many recognitions given to the practice, the visitor looked towards the horizon and in a low voice said, "It's as if people had been waiting for this!"

[Guiyang City, Guizhou Province] Guizhou Province"610 Office" Expends Millions on Building a Brainwashing Base in the Lannigou District
Last year, Guizhou Province "610 Office"* authorities built a brainwashing base in the Lannigou District, Guiyang City, to persecute Dafa practitioners. It cost more than a million Yuan** to build the base. It can hold 20 people at a time. The brainwashing process can last as long as half a year and the expense for one person is around 50,000 Yuan.
Many Dafa practitioners work in a factory in Guiyang City. The personnel from Guiyang City "610 Office" thus exerted great pressure on the factory's director. The director couldn't help but inform all workshops that Falun Gong practitioners will be sent to brainwashing centers. Knowing this information, the practitioners in the factory strengthened sending righteous thoughts and successively handed in resignations requests. The matter ended up unsettled.
[Huadian City, Jilin Province] Dafa Practitioner Mr. Gong Maoqiang Still Detained and Persecuted
Mr. Gong Maoqiang, 25, a technician, lived in the residential building of Huadian City's Rubber Factory. Mr. Gong started practicing Falun Gong in the spring of 1999. In October 2000 he went to Beijing to validate the Fa and was subsequently sentenced to three years of forced labor. As he refused to give up cultivating Falun Dafa and to write a so-called "Dissociation Statement,"*** he was often persecuted. Currently, he is still detained and being tortured at the forced labor camp.
[Beijing] Facts of Persecution against Practitioner Zhang Jiuhai
Practitioner Mr. Zhang Jiuhai is a farmer from Hebei Province. Because he did not want to give up practicing Falun Dafa, he went to Beijing to appeal against the persecution. In July of 2000, he was detained at Division No. 2 in the Tuanhe Labor Camp for one year. He refused to cooperate with the unjust demands of the authorities and his term was extended for six months. After he completed the extended term, he still had not given in. The police from the labor camp used an electric baton to torture him physically, and other means to torture him mentally, in order to make him give in and be "transformed." In 2002, after he finished his term, instead of releasing him back home, he was sent to a brainwashing center. He did not cooperate with the brainwashing and was sent back to the Tuanhe Labor Camp for the second time. Because of the long-term physical and mental torture, his health is getting worse and worse. During the detention, the police detained him with several criminal prisoners who had been instigated to abuse practitioners. Under the persecution in 2003, Mr. Zhang Jiuhai went on hunger strike, and his current situation is unknown.
The responsible person: chief of Division No. 2 named Ji.
[Fushun City, Liaoning Province] Illegal Arrest of Practitioners
Recently, with help from the Qingyuan Town Political and Judiciary Committee, Fushun City Police Department personnel arrested many practitioners from Qingyuan Town. They are: Li Wensong, Ms. Wei Minghua and her husband, Zhou Yuren, Zhou Fulong, Zhou Yuyi and his wife and daughter Zhou Meina, Zhou Yuying, Zhao Liankai, Jiang Defang, Wang Guihua, Wang Lan, Yan Yueceng and his wife, and Liu Jinping.
One of the arrested practitioners, Ms. Wei Minghua, is a teacher from Qingyuan Middle School. The police beat her to the ground in public and dragged her by her feet through the playground and to the police car. The police carried practitioner Li Wensong from the 6th floor of a building to the police car. Many people witnessed the scene and the neighbors could attest to it.
[Chaoshan City, Guangdong Province] List of Names of Perpetrators from a "610 Office" Brainwashing Center
Lin Zhui (policeman), Li Zhuowei, Peng Weiming, and a guard named Lan.
These four people often brutally torture Dafa practitioners in brainwashing centers. The worst is Lin Zhui. He drinks on duty and tries to get promotions by violently beating Dafa practitioners. Some practitioners were beaten with chairs, causing severe injuries and bleeding. He kicked one female practitioner down to ground. Once, while beating a practitioner, his hand sustained a fracture. Furthermore, troubles in his family continue to worsen, but Lin Zhui still continuously commits crimes against Dafa practitioners.
[Jieyang City, Guangdong Province] List of Names and Phone Numbers of Lawless Policemen Who Persecute Dafa Practitioners
In August 2002, a truth-clarifying Dafa materials production center in Jieyang City was destroyed. Dafa practitioners Ms. Lin Shaofang, Mr. Wu Kaitao and Cai were illegally detained at the No.1 Detention Center. *** A "Dissociation Statement" is a statement to declare one's dissociation with Falun Gong and promise not go to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong.
(Clearwisdom.net) A "solemn declaration" is a person's public statement declaring to the world that whatever he or she has done or said under duress or deception that was against Falun Dafa is null and void. Most of these statements have come from Falun Dafa practitioners in China who wished to express regret that, in the face of physical torture and brainwashing, they had signed documents renouncing Dafa and guaranteeing not to practice again. Also, as more and more people in China learn the truth about how they have been deceived and lied to by the Jiang regime, many non-practitioners are also submitting "solemn declarations."
Here are some examples of the Solemn Declarations:

In a certain place in the northeast of China, there is a man who was the head of a detention center. Being deceived by the lies after July 20, 1999 [The day the Jiang regime launched the persecution against Falun Gong], he was involved in persecuting Dafa practitioners who were illegally detained in that detention center. Many practitioners have clarified the truth to him over the last four years. The compassion of Dafa practitioners eventually aroused his conscience. In the past, he didn't believe in the principle of good being rewarded and evil being punished. He suffered from pain in his arms and hands after beating practitioners, and after he abused practitioners his teeth often ached. One time, he suffered an unbearable pain in his head after he beat up some practitioners. This made him realize that he was getting what he deserved. Then, while he was by himself, he tried the Falun Standing Stance in imitation of the Falun Gong exercise. After some time the pain in his head disappeared. He was deeply surprised by the great power of Dafa and truly realized the universal truth that good and bad deeds will receive their due retribution . After his conscience was awakened, he began to treat the practitioners well and protect them. Whenever the higher authorities and "610 Office" personnel* came to the detention center to ransack these practitioners' belongings and confiscate their books, this director took their Dafa books beforehand and returned them to the practitioners after the 610 officials left. Furthermore, he also told other policemen in the detention center to treat Dafa practitioners well.
