For over two years, the Jiang-Luo regime has used numerous atrocious and despicable methods to brutally persecute Falun Gong. Currently more than 1,600 practitioners have been persecuted to death, more than 500 practitioners illegally sentenced, more than 1,000 forced into mental institutions, more than 20,000 unlawfully sent to forced labor camps, more than 100,000 arrested and detained, and a countless number of practitioners have been beaten and have received inhumane treatment. Although this divided families and upset millions of relatives, friends, and colleagues of practitioners in China, Falun Gong has become stronger even as the persecution escalated, and it has spread to more than 50 nations across the globe.

Due to Jiang's tyrannical pursuit of political supremacy and personal interests, he has squandered national resources and barred people from knowing the truth about Falun Gong. However, at 8 p.m. on March 5, 2002, in Falun Gong's birthplace of Changchun, eight cable network TV channels broadcast "Falun Dafa Spreads Throughout the World" and "Self-Immolation or Deception?" along with other truth-clarification programs. The air time lasted about 40 to 50 minutes, and enabled hundreds of thousands of people to see the truth about Falun Gong. This forcefully breached the Jiang-Luo regime's Falun Gong information blockade, and rectified their deceiving propaganda. The Jiang-Luo regime madly panicked upon seeing the courageous acts of practitioners, and Jiang cried, "Shoot to kill without mercy!" Because everything of Jiang and Luo was established on the basis of their false propaganda, they fear the people knowing the truth.

During today's information age, any government sustained by deceitful propaganda is destined to crumble. The more lies they concoct, the weaker they become. It is like a giant balloon. When you pinch it slightly, it will explode into pieces. The Jiang-Luo regime controlled all Chinese media for two years, deceiving and poisoning innocent people, and preventing Falun Gong from having any voice at all. The 40 to 50 minutes of truth on Changchun television scared the establishment to a great extent, so it is evident how the Jiang-Luo regime is afraid of people finding out the truth.

At the same time, when the Jiang-Luo despots are enraged, they're also struggling before their final destruction, as they madly persecute Falun Gong practitioners. Jiang's fiendish nature emerged when he personally ordered to "shoot and kill without mercy" any Falun Gong practitioners spotted with truth-clarification materials. All righteous and kindhearted people and governments of the world will now recognize the Jiang-Luo regime's wickedness, and put a stop to this senseless mass-murder of benevolent Falun Dafa practitioners.

Eyewitness Account (I)

Today, the Nanguan District Court of Changchun City unjustly sentenced thirteen innocent Falun Dafa practitioners. Out of concern for the fates of these fellow practitioners, and to express my support for the justice these practitioners uphold, I went to the court hearing.

When I arrived there at 8:10 a.m., police vehicles and policemen were guarding all the intersections. There were a total of about 1,000 police officers, including plainclothes officers. Police were everywhere within a range of 200-300 meters of the courthouse. Quite a few practitioners had arrived nearby, and everyone stood there quietly.

At 8:40, people were unfairly ushered towards the Makewei Seafood Plaza across the street from the courthouse. At around 9 o'clock, the police suddenly encircled the group and began arresting people. Among those arrested were some non-practitioners. Altogether, two large buses and ten small cars drove away filled with people who had been arrested. According to practitioners who were located in other spots, some police hid in alleys and rushed towards anyone who came close to the courthouse. Those who passed by, stood, or stopped were all subject to arrest. Practitioners who refused to cooperate were kicked and forced into the vehicles. The scene was quite violent and sad.

By 9:20 a.m. there were almost no practitioners left in the area, but the police were still around.

This is a so-called "open trial" in today's Mainland China. A "public trial" that cannot be seen by the public, and one that the authorities dare not let the public see.

Eyewitness Account (II)

Today the Nanguan District Court of Changchun City was supposed to hold a public trial for Falun Dafa practitioners at 8:30 a.m. Between 7:00 and 8:00, police vehicles with special plates or other local plates were everywhere within a 500-meter distance of the courthouse along the North- and South-bound streets. Similar vehicles were also visible nearby along the East- and West-bound streets. The total number of police vehicles was around one hundred, and each was full of police officers. In an alley south of the courthouse, there were ten vehicles filled with riot police. There were also two fire department vehicles carrying armed police. Plainclothes police were also stationed in the nearby stores, banks, food markets, and residential buildings.

At around 8:30, traffic police suddenly sealed off the nearby roads. At the same time, police, armed police, and plainclothes rushed out to beat pedestrians and onlookers in this area. In the alley, on the street, and inside and outside the stores, violence and evil permeated the air. One practitioner saw four women being arrested from a residential building. He didn't know what the reason was, and only heard one of the four ladies ask, "Why am I being arrested? What did I do?" Over a dozen people standing on the sidewalk opposite the courthouse were suddenly surrounded by police and dragged into police cars without being given any chance to contest or explain. Even old ladies standing on the sidewalk were not left out. Vicious police officers lifted these old ladies by their arms and, claiming that they had to have a talk and dragged them away. These harrowing arrests were carried out in broad daylight. It is unknown how many people were arrested that day.

[Jilin City, Jilin Province] Over Thirty Falun Gong Practitioners Recently Arrested

According to local sources, on February 9^th, "Falun Dafa Day in Jilin", the police had received prior notice. As soon as practitioners started gathering, over 30 people were arrested.

On February 26^th, several dozen practitioners went to the funeral of a male practitioner who had died from persecution. They were secretly videotaped. One person was arrested on the spot. Afterwards, some practitioners were arrested after being identified from the videotaped footage.

[Northern China] To Validate Dafa to the Public, Practitioners Resume Group Fa-Study and Practice

It is reported that Falun Dafa practitioners in a certain area in Northern China have stepped forward after Chinese New Year's Day to participate in Falun Gong group practice in order to validate Dafa to the public. They have restored the group practice environment , which has been severely damaged since July 20^th, 1999 by Jiang and Luo and their group of political scoundrels. This has so far lasted several days. Villagers were surprised at this action taken by Dafa practitioners, but since they had heard the truth about Falun Gong, they understood the reason for it.

Also, in some areas in a northern province in China, practitioners have resumed group Fa-study. Practitioners in a couple regions have never stopped group Fa-study since July 20^th, 1999 when the persecution of Falun Dafa began. No matter how much the environment has changed, these practitioners have held firm to their belief. Their courageous acts have helped stabilize the form in which Dafa is being spread in this world and, at the same time, have intimidated the evil forces.

[Hubei Province] Thousands of Families Find the Truth Upon Opening their Doors on Chinese New Year's Day

On Chinese New Year's Eve (February 11^th, 2002), practitioners in a city in Hubei Province delivered almost ten thousand copies of Falun Gong truth-clarifying materials and CDs to fellow residents. Over a dozen banners around 15 feet long were hung at intersections and railroad overpasses. Self-adhesive leaflets were posted on the power poles of several streets, including on the poles just outside the district Police Department and the municipal Judiciary Bureau. From the second day to the fifth day of January in the Chinese lunar calendar, the evil forces announced on propaganda vehicles as well as through radio and TV stations that a cash reward of 500 to 1000 Yuan would be given to anyone who catches the Falun Dafa practitioners who distribute Falun Gong truth materials [The average monthly salary of an urban worker is about 500 Yuan]. On the fifth day of January in the lunar calendar, a practitioner overheard a police officer when the officer was talking on his walkie-talkie, "What! Falun Gong leaflets were seen during daytime in the municipal Party committee...." This Fa-rectification activity has effectively shocked the evil forces.

[Hubei Province] Even Extreme Physical and Mental Torture Cannot Change Dafa Practitioners' Righteous Belief

The Fanjiatai Prison of the Shayang Forced Labor Camp in Hubei Province is a place used to detain felons. Twenty-one illegally sentenced Dafa practitioners including several steadfast assistants from the former Falun Dafa assistant centers in various areas were held there. All of them were illegally sentenced to over three years in prison. During the illegal detention, the vicious guards didn't allow the practitioners to talk to each other, and they assigned the criminals to watch the practitioners day and night. Dafa practitioners were forced to do excessive amounts of labor in the prison's brickfield for over ten hours a day. At night, the guards forced Dafa practitioners to write the so-called thought reports. They also handcuffed or bound practitioners, or they used other brutal means to torture them. They used extreme torture in an attempt to force Dafa practitioners to give up their righteous belief. Many practitioners' hands were badly bruised from the brutal torture. They were only skin and bone. However, Dafa practitioners' belief in Teacher and Dafa was rock-solid.

On one occasion, the guards forced all the people to visit a photo exhibition defaming Falun Dafa. Several Dafa practitioners destroyed the exhibited pictures right away. It showed the practitioners' fearless courage and determination in safeguarding Dafa, which forcefully frightened the evil.

When a practitioner's relative came to visit him, a person who watched this practitioner said to him, "If you are reformed [renounce Falun Dafa], we'll reduce your penalty, and immediately assign you light work." This practitioner said to his relative right away, "Please buy 200 pairs of gloves for me!" (He had to wear gloves to do heavy work in the brickfield). It showed his determination in Dafa.

[Shuangyashan City, Heilongjiang Province] Jianshan District People's Court of Shuangyashan City in Heilongjiang Province Holds Another Unjust Trial of a Falun Dafa Practitioner

On March 6, 2002, Dafa practitioner Pan Xingfu's older brother (a non-practitioner) was told to go to the People's Court. He was told that Pan Xingfu would be tried at 8:30 a.m. on March 7. They also said that Pan had committed the so-called "impeding the implementation of the constitution." The juror, Zhang, told Pan Xingfu that only two of his family members would be allowed to attend the trial. We hope that Dafa practitioners who hear this news will send forth the righteous thoughts to eliminate the evil.

[Lanzhou City, Gansu Province] Lu Yuying, a Dafa Practitioner from Lanzhou, Gansu Province Has Been On a Hunger Strike for Almost One Month to Protest Her Illegal Detention

On the night of February 5, Lu Yuying, a Dafa practitioner from Lanzhou was abducted by the vicious police from the Anning Police Department. She has been illegally detained in the Xiguoyuan Detention Center in Lanzhou since then. She refused to cooperate with the evil's request, and has been on a hunger strike for almost one month to protest her illegal detention. On February 28, her family members asked the police to release her. The police shamelessly extorted 2,000 Yuan (500 Yuan is the monthly salary for an average Chinese worker), which, they said, was for the expenses of treating her in a hospital after she went on a hunger strike. Her family members firmly refused to give them money, and sternly told the police that if they still refused to release her, the Political Security Section of the Anning Police Department would have to take responsibility for the consequences that resulted from their actions.

We have learned that the guards from the Heizuizi Female Forced Labor Camp in Changchun have been brutally persecuting steadfast Dafa practitioners, including Wang Xiuqing from Yanbian City. We hope that people from all walks of life will have this matter brought to their attention, and immediately stop the inhumane persecution of Dafa practitioners.

[Yushu City, Jilin Province] Police in Yushu City, Jilin Province Abduct Three Falun Dafa Practitioners

On December 24, 2001, police from Yushu City's Police Department in Jilin Province abducted Dafa practitioner Li Junmei and two other practitioners, whose names are unknown. Li Junmei divorced her husband long ago and she had lived with her 15-year-old child. She is now being detained in the Changchun Heizuizi Forced Labor Camp, and her child has been left at home alone.

[Beijing] Dafa Practitioner Confronts Police and Exposes Their Evil Deeds, Shaking the Haidian Detention Center

On December 1, 2000, after suffering for six months, Dafa practitioner Zhao Xin, a lecturer from the Beijing Industrial and Commercial University died as a result of beatings she had received from police at the Haidian Detention Center in Beijing. At the end of December, an over 60 year old female practitioner in Beijing went to the Haidian District Detention Center with literature and pictures that exposed the truth about how Zhao Xin was tortured to death. Directly facing the thugs who participated in the beating, she disclosed their evil deeds and requested that the officials from the detention center severely punish these thugs.

After learning that they had been exposed, the vicious police showed no sign of repentance. They were instead full of hatred and fear in their hearts, and they held the elderly lady in a cell and brutally beat her. The elderly lady still meditated and practiced the exercises due to her rock-solid belief in Dafa. Both the prisoners and the guards rushed up to stop her from doing an exercise, but they could not make this practitioner yield. Several days later, the police felt guilty, and then released this righteous and brave Dafa practitioner.

[Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province] Shijiazhuang City in Hebei Province Recruits 6,600 Personnel for "Joint Defense And Patrolling"

According to internal sources, around New Year's Day, Shijiazhuang City recruited 6,600 unemployed young workers to establish a "joint defense and patrolling team." Each person's monthly salary is 650 Yuan. We could see the personnel on duty everywhere on streets and walkways. Three to five of them made up a group. They all held electric batons, and wore long gray coats and white steel helmets. In addition, at the gate of the work units' dorms or residential areas, they set up a new "office" and kept a guard on duty everyday for 24 hours to "tighten up the defense."

Even in this tightly-watched, evil environment, Dafa practitioners, just as before, skillfully distributed flyers, passed out CDs, posted or hung up banners, and sent truth-clarifying literature to predestined people. The practitioners used all possible methods to clarify the truth and they made every effort to offer salvation to the people of the world.

[Dafeng County, Jiangsu Province] The Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioners Escalates in the Fangqiang Forced Labor Camp

Recently, the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in the Fangqiang Forced Labor Camp in Jiangsu Province has suddenly escalated. Techniques utilized in Masanjia Forced Labor Camp were applied in the further persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. The policemen not only beat the practitioners themselves, but also instructed the criminal prisoners in the camp to brutally beat up the practitioners detained there. Some methods of torture employed there included: using several electric batons to shock practitioners, using shoes to beat practitioners' mouths, punching with fists, kicking, sleep deprivation for up to two weeks, force-feeding, forcing practitioners' heads into toilets, etc. The practitioners detained there are suffering from inhumane torture.

[Laiwu City, Shandong Province] The Laiwu Police Department Abducts a Female Practitioner

During the time of the "Two Conferences" [the People's Congress and the Political Consultation Conference] held in April, policemen were harassing, stalking and capturing Falun Dafa practitioners. In the early morning of February 28, 2002, policemen from the Laiwu Police Station illegally abducted a female Falun Dafa practitioner from her home in Sunhuayuan Residential Village in Laiwu City. They ransacked her home and confiscated her property for no apparent reason. She is the mother of a three-year-old child, and it is unknown where this woman is being held. The police also spy on and follow Falun Dafa practitioners who have become homeless in order to escape persecution.

[Xiangfan City, Hubei Province] Policemen Loot Dafa Practitioners' Homes After Deceiving Them with False Sympathy And Feigned Concern

The "610 Office" in Xianghuan City, Hubei Province, acts at the direction of the Jiang/Luo criminal group ["610 Office" is an agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong, with absolute power over each level of administration in the party and all other political or judicial systems]. Together with the municipal propaganda organizations and the "5.1" Textile Plant, it held a pictorial display, placed in the textile plant's display windows, defaming Falun Dafa. Resolutely resisting such a deceitful display, Falun Dafa practitioners in Xianghuan City sent forth their righteous thoughts together, which greatly eradicated and shocked the evil forces.

During the so-called "Hundred Day Efforts," which coincided with and followed the Chinese Lunar New Year, as instructed by higher authorities, policemen from the Xianghuan Police Station have gone to the doors of practitioners' homes, feigning sympathy and concern. When the practitioners invite them into their homes, the policemen begin recklessly looting the practitioners' property. Two practitioners, Dongyun (female) and Li Ying (female), had their cash stolen and property confiscated. The Xianghuan Police Department had originally focused on the pursuit and capture of Li Ying. Practitioners who were interrogated and abducted from the Textile Plant include Hu Gaoying, Song Yuzhi, Xiao Daoqin and Junior Jiang.

[Yueyang City, Hunan Province] The Officers Stoop to the Lowest Level in Order to Keep Their Official Posts

Over the past two years that Falun Gong has been persecuted, all the police officers that have gotten to know practitioners are aware in their hearts that Falun Dafa practitioners are good and virtuous people. However, some officers don't have any sense of justice. They have publicly stated that they would do anything to keep their official posts. Zhang Yaofei, Director of the Luowang Police Station, threatened Falun Dafa practitioners saying, "We have no problem with you Falun Dafa practitioners' moral behavior. But my parents supported me for my education so that that I could keep a job. If you go to Beijing and I lose my job because of it, you won't be able to live in the community we are in charge of [meaning that the practitioners will be sent from the community to the detention center]." The Luowang officers in charge of persecuting Falun Gong practitioners privately said to their subordinates, "It doesn't matter how many people die in Luowang. You know the murder case in the Xiangbei Market? We don't have any responsibility for the two deceased. But for Falun Gong, it is different. If they leave for Beijing, all our "rice bowls" [i.e., jobs] will be gone." Therefore, in order to keep their jobs, the police often monitor practitioners' homes 24 hours a day, harass or illegally detain practitioners for no reason.

Because some of their local policemen are notorious thugs, the people sadly sigh, "What a society this is! The vicious are in charge of the good." An officer in the Yueyang Detention Center said, "I am happy with whoever else comes here but Falun Gong practitioners. I don't like Falun Gong coming here. I can't gain anything from them, not even a pack of cigarettes."

Hereby, we remind those officers who cannot tell benevolence from cruelty that, "Never in history has someone who persecuted those with upright faiths ever succeeded" (From Teacher's article "Coercion Cannot Change People's Hearts," March 2001) and never has anyone who aided and abetted those infamous criminals ever come to a good end. We hope that you cherish your own lives. To protect benevolence is to create a bright future for yourselves.

[Dalian City, Liaoning Province] A Doctor Is Illegally Captured for Firmly Cultivating in Falun Dafa

Doctor Yin Jiaqiang is a young M.D. in the Cancer Ward of a Dalian City military hospital. He had once cured a patient with cirrhosis of the liver. From the aspect of medicine, cirrhosis of the liver cannot be reversed, but he suggested that the patient learn Falun Gong. One month later, when the patient came back for reexamination, a miracle had occurred. No sign of cirrhosis of the liver was found after ultrasonic examination, and all test reports showed liver functions were normal. Since then, Dr. Yin has also started the cultivation practice of Falun Dafa.

Dr. Yin was forced to transfer from the military work unit to civilian work, and he returned to Yueyang City, Hunan Province. Soon thereafter, in early 2001, Mayor Yu Laishan of Yueyang City issued an order to arrest him without cause. Hearing the news, Dr. Yin left his home. However, his brother was implicated in his disappearance, and had to quit working for over six months. On January 9, 2002, while Yin Jiaqiang was visiting his mother, he was captured and his whereabouts still remain unknown.

[Yueyang City, Hunan Province] Yueyang "610 Office" Confiscated Money and Property by Intimidation

Falun Dafa practitioner Tang Qinghua, together with another practitioner, went to visit a fellow practitioner. She was then illegally detained by the local police and the "610 Office" for over thirty-seven days on the dubious charge of "disturbing the public order." Her family members were told to pick her up from the detention center in exchange for 2000 Yuan. Without the money, she would be sent to a forced labor camp.

[Jiutai City, Jilin Province] Yinmahe Forced Labor Camp Has Criminals Pretend to be Falun Gong Practitioners on TV

On February 9, 2002, Jiutai Television Station of Jilin Province and the Jiutai Forced Labor Camp jointly shot a video. The content was on how to brainwash Falun Gong practitioners being detained in a forced labor camp. In the video, it says that there were thirty Falun Gong practitioners who had been brainwashed, in fact, only seventeen of the thirty people were Falun Gong practitioners; the rest were criminals who pretended to be Falun Gong practitioners. Most of these seventeen Falun Gong practitioners compromised against their wills due to the coercion, intimidation, beating, and torture used by the prison guards and the extremely cruel and merciless criminals. Jiutai Forced Labor Camp, a directly subordinate department of Jilin Province, and the Jiutai Television Station: You two have jointly fabricated this video. To where are you misleading people?

From 2001 until now the Yinmahe Forced Labor Camp in Jiutai City of Jilin Province, especially the education team (the cadres of the team are Gao Ke who is the political instructor, secretary Luo, and other cadres and policemen) has beaten Falun Gong practitioners brutally and set up private rooms to obtain confessions by torture. They instructed the extremely cruel and merciless criminals to beat, abuse, and torture Falun Dafa practitioners. The head criminal is Zhu Zhenggang. They took Falun Gong practitioners to the torture rooms and used iron wire to tie those who did not renounce Falun Gong to the "Dead Person's Bed," where they beat them with boards, clubs, and electric batons. The ribs of those practitioners who were tortured seriously bled for many days and were swollen. Still, they did not allow Falun Gong practitioners to sleep and they tortured them endlessly, not allowing them to talk with each other or speak. They also used the criminals to isolate each Falun Gong practitioner one by one. They asked these criminals to watch the practitioners and if any criminal did not watch them, he or she would be deducted one point (one point is worth a one day reduction of their prison sentence). The prison cadres used means just like this, giving points to the criminals to lure those cruel and heartless people to torture Falun Dafa practitioners.

[Shanghai City] Internet Policemen Arrest Innocent Students

Recently, a practitioner in Shanghai went to an Internet cafe near Jumen Street in Shanghai City. He learned from the owner of this Internet cafe that in the past several months, the Chinese internet policemen forced some people to attend the so-called training classes many times and asked them to install new Internet monitoring facilities. During the training, the policemen not only boasted that they had dozens of computers monitoring the whole city's network around the clock, but also mentioned the following incident many times to prove that they had such ability.

A freshman student in the Shanghai Normal School was surfing the Internet in school, he accidentally joked to his friend on a BBS (a Chinese bulletin board on the internet where people can register and login, and post articles to express their opinions), "Tonight, we are going to practice, practice Falun Gong." At that time, the policemen's computers immediately displayed that this student was using the Network of the Shanghai Normal School. Within twenty minutes, the police rushed to the school and arrested the innocent student who was still sitting in front of the computer. Then they tortured him. When the policemen talked about this occurrence, they were often very pleased with it. They used taxpayers' money to expand the special agent organization of Jiang and Luo's regime, and conversely monitored the taxpayers and deprived them of their legal rights.

The evil persecution of Falun Dafa practitioners is still going on there.

As practitioners in China face tremendous pressure to give up their beliefs under the Chinese regime's brutal persecution, there are those who have given in and signed documents renouncing Falun Dafa. However, many of these people deeply regret doing so after they are released from detention and labor camps. "Solemn declarations" are the public statements made by such practitioners, often at great risk to their personal safety, to declare to the world that the documents they signed under duress are null and void and that they will continue to practice Falun Dafa.

(Clearwisdom.net) I made a declaration last September; but now realize that it was only a declaration from an ordinary person, not from a Falun Dafa practitioner. At that time, I didn't really understand how serious a blunder I had made towards Dafa.

I was fortunate enough to obtain Dafa in 1997. After reading Zhuan Falun twice, I knew that I had finally found the truth of the universe and the real meaning of human life, which I had been seeking for many years. I decided that I would cultivate until I reached consummation.

Through several years of cultivation, I totally understood that Falun Dafa is the absolute truth of the universe from the standpoint of both perception and rationality. When the evil began to persecute Dafa, my faith in Falun Dafa was never shaken. With the help of fellow practitioners, I realized that I should step forward to validate Dafa without the attachment of life and death, and then I stepped forth without hesitation. In the labor camp, all the tortures, hard labor, and betrayals by other practitioners couldn't change my confirmation of Falun Dafa. I was never deceived by the evil "enlightenment" of others. Even after I was led along the path of evil enlightenment, I was still determined to safeguard Dafa with my life. Then how did it happen that I was led to evil "enlightenment"?

As Master says in "No Politics:" "Human society is a good place for cultivation, since everything here can induce attachments." I thought that I had let go of life and death during the process of stepping forward, but I did not realize that I had developed a new attachment of treating cultivation like work, as doing things for Falun Dafa. After breaking away from human notions again and again, I was pulled down by my attachments.

This happened in the labor camp in October 2000. After I defeated the evil's all-night attack once more, they suddenly stopped attacking me from outside. I thought I had passed another test and could relax a little. At this moment, an idea came to my mind: "It is so cruel inside the labor camp. Why don't you sign a statement and then get out to expose the evil?" When this thought first appeared in my mind, I was so astonished. I could not believe it was my own thought. But the evil knew very clearly that I had the attachment of doing "work," so after all the other methods failed, it caused me to think in a crooked way because of the attachment.

I struggled for several days. I tried to repel or suppress this thought, but I failed. My main consciousness was not strong enough and I still had attachments. Finally, I took this thought as my own and was controlled by the evil after that. At the beginning, I still knew that as soon as I signed, I could no longer say that I was a Dafa practitioner. Then my attachments told me I should sacrifice my own cultivation and consummation for Dafa. And step-by-step I was led along an evil path, believing I could find a way out of impossibilities. I even thought because I had passed all kinds of tests, I could then use this method to get out. This kind of thought is typical of "demonic interference from one's own mind" and extremely dangerous. How dare any life in this universe say, under any circumstances, that he need not obey the principles of the universe?

How could "evil enlightenment" develop in such a way? Besides my attachments, there was some very deeply hidden degeneration inside me, and my self-conceit also played an important role in misleading me. I thought I was very smart, smarter than everybody else. That was why I still thought that I was lofty enough to sacrifice everything for Dafa, and that I hadn't really denounced Dafa when I was controlled by the demonic interference from my own mind.

Before I was led to "evil enlightenment," my heart bled for my fellow practitioners who still felt well after being "reformed," not knowing what a dreadful situation they were in. I never expected that one day I would be in the same situation. This is how dreadful it is when one doesn't get rid of one's attachments!

Sadly, even after I was released from the labor camp, I still held on to my attachments, thinking that I could make up for everything by "working" for Dafa. I forgot Master's teaching that "the entire cultivation process for a practitioner is one of constantly giving up human attachments;" and I also forgot that Master had repeatedly told us to study Dafa more. I ignored the importance of the study, because I was too "busy." Those are the reasons why it took me so long to get out of "evil enlightenment."

Upon awaking from my long illusion, I found that the play on "the large stage" is near its end. How dreadful! If I still held onto my attachments and "evil enlightenment," I would surely be destroyed without even knowing why.

Upon awaking from my long delusion, I am too ashamed of myself to say anything to Master, who with his boundless mercy saved me again from the dreadful state of being led by the demonic interference from my own mind. I can only express my gratitude towards those who have helped me to awaken and apologize to those whom I once hurt with bad words or bad thoughts.

I solemnly declare once again that all the things I once wrote and said, which were not in accordance with Dafa, are null and void! I will try my best to follow Master in Fa-rectification in order to compensate for the damage I have brought to Dafa.

(Clearwisdom.net) Jiang and his faction's senseless repression of Falun Gong has made all Dafa practitioners and their families suffer persecution to varying degrees. This kind of persecution is happening everywhere. I am only one of the hundreds of thousands of common people who have suffered.

After July 20, 1999, I went through some solemn pondering and I decided that I was still determined to practice Dafa. In 2000, I started to join the powerful current of Fa-rectification, and participated in truth-clarifying activities. As Jiang's regime escalated its cruel policy of repression and implication, my husband and other family members started obstructing me from doing truth-clarifying work. My husband was worried about the whole family getting entangled in trouble if I were to get arrested. He requested that I give up cultivation; otherwise, he would file for divorce. I told him that practitioners were being treated unjustly, and I had to do the work. If I did something specific that was wrong, he should point it out and I would fix it. But I could not give up cultivation; Falun Dafa is good. My husband said: "I cannot say that anything that you do is wrong, but Jiang does not allow it. You will interfere with our daughter's schooling, my work and my participation in the Party. I just won't let you practice." I refused all his requests based on the reason that no one should interfere with my individual beliefs. That is a person's most basic right. My husband filed for a divorce after we could not reconcile our differences after a few months. In the courtroom, I described my course of attaining the Fa, my change after attaining it and the evidence of the mental and physical benefits I obtain from it. My husband had no words to say. Even the judge did not say one word opposing Dafa. The judicial officer made one statement: "Why don't you just let her practice?" My husband said: "I can tolerate it, but what about our daughter? She teaches her Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance." I said in reply: "Do I teach wrong? Is Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance not good?" At this time, the court could not reach a decision. Later, my husband stubbornly persisted in his opinion; he was afraid that his future would suffer. So we got divorced and he was given custody of our daughter. Tears covered my face as I looked at my five-year old daughter. Jiang's evil crimes had broken up our originally peaceful and happy family. Now it has been a few months since the divorce. My husband has not looked for another wife yet. When people refer him to someone, he says that he did not get divorced to marry someone else. He is waiting for the country's policy to change; he is waiting for me. Every time I go to see our daughter, she says: "My mommy is a good person. Why do police want to catch good people? Daddy also says that you are such good people. Why does Jiang not let you practice?"

Under the intense pressure of Jiang's power, how many people have been forced to do things against their wills, say things against their wills, and condemn their consciences! We call for justice and conscience. We want a complete family!

(Clearwisdom.net) Zhang Jiaguo, now the mayor of Macheng City, Hubei Province, is chiefly responsible for the persecution of Falun Gong in that district. Just one month after he became the mayor last March (2001), an atrocity took place. Wang Huajun, a faithful and steadfast young female Dafa practitioner, was beaten unconscious, and then set on fire and burned to death while she was still alive. All of this happened right in front of the City Hall. This atrocity was undeniably linked to Zhang's direct orders, so Zhang has undisputable responsibility.

When the 2002 Spring Festival was about to arrive, Zhang, who showed no sign of repentance or remorse for his monstrous crimes, eagerly followed Jiang's call of winning "merits" and making "contributions." On the 28th day in the 12th month of the lunar calendar in a Macheng City television broadcast he announced he would have all Falun Gong practitioners arrested and detained. The next day he suddenly felt severe pain in his throat, and a medical examination revealed a tumor there. On New Year's Eve of the Lunar calendar, during preparation for his surgery, he lost consciousness after being anesthetized, and had to be hurried to Wuhan City, Hubei Province for emergency treatment. So before he was even able to show off his so-called achievements, he nearly lost his life. Those who support his persecution of Falun Gong should think about the heavenly principle that good is rewarded with good and evil is met with evil. They must be aware that retribution will fall upon them.

On the Eve of the Lunar New Year, Dafa practitioner's activities for clarifying the truth went amazingly well in every township and village in the Macheng area. Dafa practitioners posted flyers and hung banners right under the streetlights or on the streets without encountering even one security person or plain-clothes policeman. So the villains' plans failed.

During the first night after the Lunar New Year, Dafa practitioners immediately started another round of hanging banners and posting flyers. They hung banners at all major intersections. Several banners were hung on the road connecting Baiguo Town and Macheng City downtown. The next day when I passed this road, I saw that some banners had been removed. When the vehicle I was riding in arrived got close to the bridge, it could not move forward anymore because of a traffic jam, so it had to turn back. I got out of the vehicle and continued to go forward walking. I saw the crowd and vehicles densely packed on the road. When I managed to walk through the crowd and approach the bridge, I saw a red banner about 2-meters [about 6 feet] long hanging on a utility pole on one side of the bridge with "Falun Dafa is good" and "Falun Dafa is diamond-solid" written on it in yellow letters. Under the banner were the crowds of people and vehicles that were slowly moving. People often looked up at the banner. I felt happiness from the bottom of my heart. On the opposite side of the road was a police vehicle, and the policemen were in front directing the traffic. The traffic jam must have started when the policemen began to remove the banners and posters along the road. How foolish these policemen were! They did not want people to see the banners; but instead, they caused more people see it. The massive crowd moved back and forth on the bridge. I had never seen a traffic jam on this road before. This one was even worse than the traffic jams in big cities.

I believe that incidents of criminal's such as Zhang Jiaguo receiving retribution are inseparable from Macheng Dafa practitioners' brave and persistent efforts of promoting Dafa and their mighty righteous thoughts. Let's continue our persistent efforts, constantly send forth our powerful righteous thoughts, and act together with Dafa practitioners in Wuhan and other areas to eliminate the evil factors in the province.

1. The Public Security Department of Changchun City is collaborating with the Procurator of Nanguan District in illegally sentencing some of the arrested practitioners. At the end of 2001, the Procurator took over the cases of 13 practitioners who had been found to be producing and distributing truth-clarifying materials. The Procurator pressed charges and threatened to give those practitioners jail terms of at least seven years. These practitioners will soon be put on trial. Their names are as follows: Yang Guang, Liu Zhe (female), Zhang Chunyu, Wang Juncheng, Wang Hongge, Yang Feng, Zhang Yufeng (female), Bai Ye, Liu Shuang, Sun Changde, Lu Yan, Zheng Weidong, Zhang Shuqin (female). Practitioner Zhao Guifeng will be charged separately.

Zhao Heping (female) has been awaiting a trial for two months and has yet to be sentenced. The court asked her to decide on whether she will continue practicing Falun Gong. If the answer is yes, she will be sentenced. If no, she will be released. Zhao is solid in her belief in Falun Dafa and has refused to co-operate with the evil.

The Procurator of Nanguan District also pressed charges against Liang Guiying (female) more than a month ago, but has yet to put her on trial.

Among those that have been arrested, charged and jailed in the Third Detention Centre are Ma Yechi, Zhao Guifeng, Yin Yanli, Liu Yaqian, Xiang Xiaomin, Li Zhixiu.

2. Dai Lijun, a practitioner from Changchun, was arrested by the police from Nanquan Police Department, on January 25, 2002 at a Cultural Center. He is now being detained at the Third Detention Center. Since his detention, Dai's wife, who had suffered a stroke and is paralyzed has had nobody to provide care for her. Dai, also has a son and daughter, both of whom have also been sent to a labor camp for upholding their belief in Falun Dafa. The Public Security Department is fully aware of Dai's difficult family situation, but they refuse to release Dai.

3. Practitioner Zhang was illegally arrested and brutally tortured by the City Council. The officers pressed a thick plastic bag over her mouth and tried to suffocate her. They beat and disfigured her breasts using an electric baton. She was also subjected to having her arms pulled up and chained to her back, resulting in her being unable to raise her arms for many days after. Zhang's body is covered in wounds from the torture suffered at the hands of those officers. She is now imprisoned in the Shuangyang Third Detention Center.

4. Sui, a female practitioner from Changchun, was dragged from her home in the middle of the night, clad only in her underwear, by vicious police. She has been sent to the Sheling Detention Center in Shuangchao, which is dozens of kilometers from Changchun.

5. The head of the City Council Qi and his staff Fu, Zhang and Wang illegally arrested Dafa practitioners during the Chinese New Year, and subsequently sent them to the Detention Center where they were brutally tortured.

6. Cao Yali, a practitioner from Nongan County, shared how he/she was arrested. On January 24, 2002 at around 8 o'clock in the evening, a man and a woman knocked at my door and identified themselves as fee collectors for the TV station. I asked them to come back the following day, but the man said there were some problems with the wires and he had to check on them. When I opened the door, the man rushed into my home. A dozen people followed him. Before I could say anything, they put the cuffs on my hands. They did not allow me to speak, telling me that my arrest was caused by a problem related to my spouse. They began ransacking my home. Then they covered my head with some clothes and put me into a car. After an hour or so, we arrived at a place and I had no idea where it was. They right away made me sit on a Tiger Bench (a small iron bench that is approximately 20 cm (6 inches) tall. Practitioners are forced to sit on the bench with their knees tightly tied on it. They have to sit straight up with their eyes looking straight ahead. Their hands are tied on the back or sometimes placed on their knees. They are not allowed to turn their heads, close their eyes, talk to anyone, raise their hands or call out for the attention of the guards. Many inmates are assigned to watch the practitioners. If they turn their heads, the inmates would force them to hold their heads in that position indefinitely. If the practitioners raise their hands to call the attention of the guards when their hands are placed on their knees, the inmates would force them to hold their hands in the air indefinitely. If they speak, the inmates would force their mouths to remain open indefinitely. Usually some hard objects are inserted underneath practitioners' lower legs or ankles to make it harder for them to tolerate this abuse.) During this time, someone beat me with an electric baton and poured cold water on my head. I was also made to sit outdoors in my underwear for several hours. Meanwhile, he beat and kicked me. As a result of the torture, my chest, eyes and hands became red and swollen and my legs were covered with bruises. Even now, I can still sense numbness in my hands and pain in my chest. I learned later that it was a policeman at Changchun Police Department who had tortured me. That day, he also threatened me, saying that he could beat me to death and no one would care. I am now imprisoned at Changchun Third Detention Center.

• As a result of persecuting Falun Gong, a policeman from a county in Hebei Province had a problem with his right leg. He continued to persecute Falun Gong until he started having problems with his left leg, too, and could barely walk. He was then given a copy of Zhuan Falun by one of his relatives who is a practitioner. As he read the book, he decided to stop persecuting Falun Gong. The problems with his legs gradually disappeared.

• Cai Wenjie, Associate Bureau Chief of the Angxi District Police Station, Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province, illegally sent two Falun Dafa practitioners to a forced labor camp in October of 2001. He died four days later of a sudden heart attack.

• Parents, please teach your children well. An elementary school student ripped a Falun Dafa flyer off the wall and took down a Falun Dafa banner, against the advice of a practitioner. Shortly after, the student suffered from appendicitis and was hospitalized.

• Students at the Iron Alloys Factory Elementary School, Taihe District, Jinzhou City, Heilongjiang Province, were forced by the school administration to rip down Falun Dafa flyers posted on the walls. A practitioner asked them not to do so and warned them that they would receive retribution if they did. The students were also given a VCD with true information about Falun Gong. A student named Qin destroyed the two VCDs he received and threw them away. On his way home, he had excruciating pains in his stomach. His classmates commented that he had indeed received retribution.

• As a retiree was trying to yank down a Falun Dafa banner from a tree, a rock that had been used to fasten the banner fell down and hit his nose, leaving his nose bleeding. He even had to get two stitches. Someone told him, "This is called retribution. You shouldn't take down Falun Dafa banners." Since then, he has told everybody he meets, "Don't touch the Falun Dafa banners. I received retribution for doing that."

• Zhang Shuhui, 30, a security guard at the Drilling Technology Company of Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province participated in the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. He received retribution on his birthday, when he had a car accident and died. This happened shortly before the Spring Festival of 2002. His birthday became the day of his funeral.

• A villager ripped down a Falun Dafa flyer posted on a tree and burnt it afterwards. However, the words from the flyer remained in red, in the ashes. A passerby told him that people who destroy Falun Dafa flyers will be punished. He wouldn't listen. He died a few days later of a sudden disease.

(Clearwisdom.net) My daughter started practicing Falun Gong in February 1998. She improved greatly in both mind and body after the practice.

In the past, due to my poor health, I was not able to take care of myself, not to mention educate my daughter. My daughter was very sloppy in her studies. Each day after school, she would sit beside the TV set, watching TV while doing her homework. Her school grades were very poor then, as one can imagine.

After my daughter obtained Falun Dafa, surprisingly, she started to change, which made us very happy. She learned how to strictly discipline herself, considered others first and enjoyed helping others. Her school grades kept going up; she even got the highest score in her class in the examination for computer skills. In June 1999, when I went to school to pick her up, her teacher praised her in front of me for half an hour. This had never happened before since she'd been at that school. As a mother, I cannot tell you how happy I was then. I knew well that this was the power of Falun Dafa manifesting through her. She respected seniors and cared for children. She enjoyed studying and was willing to offer help to others. She became an excellent child that everyone praised.

Then, Falun Dafa, the practice that made her an outstanding girl, was slandered by the Chinese government. When they were confusing white with black, my daughter put down everything and went out to clarify the truth to people for the purpose of safeguarding Dafa and saving people. She went to the Beijing Petition Bureau to appeal twice and also went to Tiananmen Square to validate Dafa.

The evil forces sent my child to the detention center and then to a forced-labor camp, where she was brainwashed 24-hour a day without allowing her to see any family members or friends. She was forbidden to read Dafa books, to do Falun Gong exercises, and to communicate with any other Dafa practitioners. In such a vicious environment, my daughter dropped into the mud and enlightened along an evil path. After she returned from the forced-labor camp, she became self-centered and did whatever she liked without considering others. Now, instead of seeking spiritual growth and improving her mind nature as she used to, she only seeks fun in life and fights with her parents whenever she gets home from school. The atmosphere of our family, which used to be very harmonious, has now become very tense. Her father said, "This child has been ruined by staying in the forced-labor camp for a few months." We all feel very sad.

I cannot say how miserable I feel as a mother. If I did not practice Falun Dafa as well, I might even risk my own life to fight with these vicious beings. They ruined my wonderful child.

(Clearwisdom.net) On the afternoon of January 16, 2002, a miracle happened at the home of an elderly lady, Ma Jinghua, a countrywoman who lives outside Yangshu Town, Dehui City, Jilin Province.

When Ma's 3 daughters were studying the Fa, they suddenly found that Ma's 2-year-old grandson had disappeared. Through searching they found that the toddler had fallen head first into a cistern (a vat that Chinese rural residents use to store water; it is about half the height of an adult). The child's body was motionless. By the time he was pulled out of the water, his whole body had become blue, his face was swollen and he was not breathing. At first, the three daughters were in a panic. Then, they remembered that they were Dafa practitioners. They calmed down and sent forth righteous thoughts together, asking Teacher to save the baby, as most children of practitioners are here to obtain the Fa and the evil forces are not allowed to persecute the children. In less than one minute, sound was heard coming from the baby's stomach, and the baby started breathing again. Practitioners all thanked Teacher for his vast compassion.

The baby was fully recovered by the time they reached the hospital. The local doctor said that children in this kind of situation seldom recover. This restoration of the dying back to health once again illustrates the fact that Falun Dafa is extraordinary.

Up until February 9, 2002, I had been detained for more than 2 months. During my stay in that detention center, I was locked up in a small cell without any heat. The guards only provided me with 2 or 3 loaves of bread as well as some cold water per day. I was not allowed to go to the restroom, to brush my teeth, to take a shower or to change my clothes. Because I firmly stuck to my belief in Falun Dafa cultivation practice, I was tortured.

February 9th was a snowy, chilly day. On this morning, the guards led cellmates around, ordering them to shovel the snow. I found that the iron door of my cell was unlocked. So I opened the door and walked out of this vicious detention center. When officers and guards found that I had escaped, they set up blockades on the key roads in an attempt to capture me. During the entire next day and night, I walked through mountains and icy rivers, eating frozen bread and drinking icy water as my nourishment. Since there was deep snow on the road and my health had deteriorated due to the various tortures imposed on me at that detention center, I moved very slowly. Many times I was thrown down to the ground by gusting winds. Later, one of my legs could not even bend, so I had to walk with the support of a wooden baton. For the few times when I felt I was unable to walk, I lay down on the snowy ground to take a rest. At those moments, I even thought about dying in this way. But recalling that I was a Falun Dafa practitioner assisting our Teacher's journey in this world, I stood up again each time and continued my trip that was full of hardship and danger. I walked in this way for a day and a night, until I was found and saved by some kindhearted people. It was at this moment that I discovered both of my heels had turned black and were badly swollen due to frostbite.

Upon my return, as I transferred buses at different bus stations, traveling through different counties or cities, I noticed police officers along the roads, checking everywhere for me. I thus sent forth righteous thoughts ordering those policemen not to see me. And as a result, I safely passed ticket checks and boarded on buses each time. When I found that there were some policemen searching around even on the bus, I sent forth my righteous thoughts again. I kept doing this until I safely arrived at my destination.

After a few days of studying Fa, practicing Falun Gong exercises and sending forth righteous thoughts to eliminate the persecution imposed on me by the evil forces, in addition to receiving help and support from my kind fellow practitioners, my bruised feet recovered very quickly. Now, the swelling on my feet has diminished and I am able to walk without any support. All these recoveries occurred without taking any medical treatment. It is an unimaginable miracle from the viewpoint of medical science. If everyday people had the same frozen wounds as mine, they might have been treated with amputation. My experience again offered solid proof of the marvel of Falun Dafa.

I noticed that the current Falun Dafa truth-clarifying materials emphasize several aspects. Most of them consist of practitioners' cultivation experience in validating Dafa, exposing the evil, the persecution of practitioners, and exposing perpetrators' wrongdoings. Other topics are also covered, such as telling the perpetrators about the principle of "Good will be rewarded with good, and evil is met with evil" and the abnormal cosmic climate. The content is very efficient to help people know the truth and eliminate evil forces.

However, while the process of rectifying Fa is faster everyday, I feel that we cannot just focus our flyers on exposing evil. Due to the devastated social morality and selfishness, relationships between people are very complicated and cold. Sadly, some people who read our flyers are unmoved by the persecution of Dafa and its practitioners. Some have even thought that they would be arrested and tortured if they wanted to learn Falun Dafa. Such thoughts could make them lose the opportunity to cultivate Dafa.

Another type of person jumps to a conclusion after reading a few truth-clarifying flyers. They think that Dafa is only for curing illness and improving health. This type of thought also brings negative effects and interferes with a person's understanding of Dafa.

Having all these possible and existing problems, we might consider having more variety when choosing topics. For different groups of people and questions, we could provide different materials. People always want to learn new things and are curious about the unknown. Even though we are not going to satisfy their curiosity, it would be helpful to use this as a focal point in spreading Dafa, and also help people to know Dafa from different angles. A good article, a beautiful poem, and a good topic and comment can move people's hearts. Perhaps they will think after reading it and spread it voluntarily. It is like spreading Dafa by word of mouth, without any formality.

"Clarify the truth with wisdom." Every practitioner should think about how to help people establish righteous thoughts of Dafa during this limited time period.

Above are my personal thoughts. Please advise if anything is not appropriate.

(Clearwisdom.net) It is unavoidable to suffer from the pollution of degenerate things while cultivating in the human world. The old forces at the higher levels of the universe stick to their degenerate notions and refuse to assimilate to Dafa. They have become obstacles to the Fa-rectification of the universe. A prominent reflection of these corrupt notions of the old forces in the ordinary human world is that people only willingly accept what they are able to understand. As for things that are beyond their comprehension and their notions, they reject them instinctively without rationally analyzing whether they might be the truth.

Recently, through continuously sending forth righteous thoughts and cleaning up my own thoughts while looking deep within myself, I have come to realize that I haven't been very clear about this attachment for a long period of time since I started cultivation. I often think that I have a better understanding of the Fa than others and tend to defend my own opinions tenaciously. While sharing experiences with other fellow practitioners, I often unconsciously tell others what they should do and impose my own understandings on them, or require them to agree with me. As for different understandings of fellow practitioners, although I do not say anything openly, I do not think much of them in my heart. Unconsciously, I have nourished the attachments of competition, jealousy and showing off. Although sometimes I am aware of these problems, the mentality of "swelling with pride" will quickly hide them again. I am often attached to finding out what problems other fellow practitioners may have. Even when I kindly point out something to others, I give them the impression that I'm lecturing them.

Sometimes when I fail to pass a test well or when I'm not doing well, although I feel regretful and low in spirit, I still don't want to look within myself and see if there are any problems, or find my own problems. It seems that I still subconsciously encourage myself by thinking that "I'm extraordinary." It is best to take a matter as it stands and try to figure out how to do it better based on this assumption. More often than not I look for faults in others and argue how rational my views are. I am still attached to my own understandings and defend them tenaciously.

I realize that the attachment of thinking of oneself as better than others is very similar to the old forces' insisting on their own degenerate notions and their unwillingness to assimilate to the Fa. Now I understand that in order to deny all the arrangements of the old forces, we must dig out the roots of our own corrupt notions and attachments and eliminate them with the mighty righteous thoughts given to us by Master. In order to do this well, the most important thing is to keep studying the Fa with a calm mind. Studying the Fa with one's own stubborn notions is not a small matter, because it is also an issue of not respecting the Fa and Master.

In the past, I had a very shallow understanding with regards to the "Tolerance" of "Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance." Tolerating tribulations from everyday people was not a problem for me. However, among practitioners, especially while doing Dafa work, if there were different understandings and I felt another person was incorrect, an argument would usually go on and on as I attempted to change his mind. If the other party did not accept my understanding, my mind would be disturbed and unable to let go of it. When I blamed the other party's attachment, I knew I had attachments deep inside too, though I could not recognize what they were exactly.

Recently, when I listened to Master Li talk about how Han Xin endured the humiliation of crawling between someone's legs, I suddenly had a realization: it doesn't matter whether the other party is a practitioner and it doesn't matter whether the other party is right or wrong on the surface, we need to have tolerance in our individual cultivation. We should consider other practitioners' opinions out of our responsibilities to Dafa and compassion for our fellow practitioners. Why?

1). We are all in the maze. Therefore, what we think is the best plan on the surface may not be the best in actuality.

2). Everything arranged by Master Li is for rectifying the Fa and, at the same time, to cultivate practitioners. Master Li arranges small things to improve disciples' endurance. If we can endure, and if our Xinxing is upgraded, then this is more important than prevailing in small issues.

3). We are all particles of Dafa. Therefore, we need to look at things from the overall point of view of Dafa, and we need to think of the overall situation. We should not focus our attention on picking out other's faults. When we see a void, we should take initiative to fill it. Even though each disciple has a different cultivation path, when it comes to the important task of Hongfa (introducing Dafa to the public), we need to bind together wholeheartedly. Dafa disciples need to form one unit and actively play our own roles while, at the same time, cooperating with the overall situation.

Therefore, a cultivator must become tolerant.

This is my humble opinion. Please point out anything that is improper.

HONG KONG (AP)--Four Swiss Falun Gong followers resumed a protest outside China's liaison office Friday, but 12 Hong Kong practitioners remain in custody - refusing bail after being arrested in a scuffle with police.

The Swiss, who were freed late Thursday, moved their demonstration several steps away from the front door of the Chinese government office, to exactly the spot police told them earlier they could use for their protest.

Swiss protester Erich Bachmann said police had threatened to deport the foreign Falun Gong followers if they didn't cooperate, a charge disputed by Police Superintendent Michael Chiu.

The Swiss are vowing to refuse food for three days in protest of China's crackdown on Falun Gong but disputed suggestions they sought to provoke the arrests to gain publicity. They were arrested after police repeatedly warned them to move following complaints from the Chinese liaison office.

"It is 100 percent sure we did nothing illegal," said Bachmann, who comes from the northern Swiss village of Kreuzlingen. The Swiss said they had earlier been denied entry to mainland China [...]

Falun Gong spokeswoman Sharon Xu said the Hong Kong practitioners - arrested when they formed a circle to try to shield the Swiss from police - were refusing bail because they saw it as an admission of wrongdoing.

"They want to be released unconditionally," Xu said.

Chiu said he wasn't sure what the police could do while the Falun Gong followers won't accept bail.

"We have no option but to keep them here," Chiu said. "We're obtaining legal advice as to what to do next."

Police arrested the Falun Gong followers for obstruction but no charges have been filed yet.

The meditation [group] remains legal in Hong Kong, where followers carry out frequent protests against Beijing's often-brutal [persecution] on the group.

Thursday's incident marked only the second time Falun Gong followers were arrested here - both in demonstrations directly in front of the Chinese government office.

Both Falun Gong and the police claimed to have sustained minor injuries, but Falun Gong rejected a charge from police that one officer was bitten on the arms.

"They didn't bite," Xu said. "That's totally untrue."

HONG KONG -- Authorities filed obstruction charges Friday against 16 Falun Gong followers who scuffled with police outside China's liaison office a day earlier - the first charges filed against group members in Hong Kong.

The Falun Gong [...] remain legal in Hong Kong, where supporters frequently protest the brutal Chinese crackdown. Human rights groups say hundreds of Falun Gong followers have died while being detained in China.

Those arrested - 12 Hong Kong and four Swiss Falun Gong followers - had staged a protest outside the Chinese liaison office on Thursday. The arrests occurred after the Chinese liaison office complained.

Falun Gong spokesman Kan Hung-cheung said it appeared Hong Kong police were being pressured by China and said the charges should be dropped.

"They have arrested them wrongly and charged them wrongly," Kan said. "This is a double mistake. It will hurt the citizens of Hong Kong."

Police Superintendent Michael Chiu said Friday that two counts of obstruction were filed against the followers because they ignored police orders to move their demonstration to the side of the building.

Chiu said the first count carried a sentence of up to three months in jail and $64 in fines. The second count carried up to three months in jail and $640 in fines.

The Swiss followers were released on bail late Thursday and resumed their protest Friday in the area approved by police.

A magistrate freed the remaining practitioners on bail Friday after ordering them to return March 22.

Earlier, protester Erich Bachmann of Kreuzlingen, Switzerland, said police threatened to deport the foreign Falun Gong followers if they did not cooperate and move their protest. Chiu said that was false.

China has deported foreign Falun Gong followers in the past.

Beginning Tuesday, the students surrounded themselves with large signs and dressed in bright yellow tops adorned by sashes that read "Hunger Strike for Justice." They practiced Falun Gong exercises and read founder Li Hongzhi's books as his message came alive via a portable cassette player. Occasionally, local followers joined.

"I hope I can attract attention from the public and raise awareness," Danielle Wang said. "I want to help my father."

The Chinese government's intensified actions against practitioners this year made her "feel more obliged to get involved," Kitty Wang said.

So she asked herself, "Why don't I use this time to do something meaningful?"

In bringing its dispute with the Chinese government to the United States, the Falun Gong spiritual movement has nudged some Utah leaders into the realm of foreign diplomacy.

Late last year, the Falun Gong asked Gov. Mike Leavitt and Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson to sign proclamations supporting the movement as peaceful and beneficial. They agreed, and Leavitt decided to declare Jan. 8 "Falun Gong Day" in Utah.

But after meeting with Chinese officials, the governor did neither, citing the importance of Utah's neutrality on the issue in light of February's 2002 Olympic Winter Games.

Anderson stands by his decision to sign a proclamation, unlike the mayors of Baltimore, Seattle, San Francisco, Decatur, Ill., and Westland, Mich., who rescinded theirs under pressure from Chinese officials.

Anderson's spokesman, Josh Ewing, said Wednesday the mayor's office has received thousands of thank-you letters for protecting the Falun Gong's First Amendment rights as members protested, held vigils and distributed literature during the 17 days of the Games.

"We met with members of the Chinese government who expressed concerns about the Falun Gong, and we said, 'Hey, we are not going to allow anyone to do anything dangerous, but we are going to let them get their message across and not censor them,' " Ewing said.

Some 400 Falun Gong followers from around the country joined about 100 of their Utah counterparts during the Games, calling the Olympic spirit of global unity a complement to the movement's philosophy.

Falun Gong members have filed federal lawsuits claiming Beijing Mayor Liu Qi violated human rights and resorted to torture in quashing the movement in China's capital. Qi was served the suit in San Francisco as he was traveling to Salt Lake City to head China's Olympic delegation.

For its part, the Chinese government, which banned the Falun Gong in 1999 [...] has urged American mayors and governors to offer the movement "no recognition and support in any form."

"Falun Gong is a practice that allows us to cultivate the values of truthfulness, compassion and forbearance through meditation, abstention from alcohol and drugs, and tai-chi-like exercises."

Mei also vehemently rejected suggestions that Falun Gong protesters pulled a fire alarm during a Chinese New Year's celebration on Feb. 1 at the University of Utah, sending nearly 1,000 revelers into the midst of protesters outside.

The same thing happened last year at a Falun Gong convention in San Jose, Calif., and a San Francisco City Council hearing, Mei said. "Someone is trying to link us to fire alarms and public disturbance, and this is something we definitely want cleared up."

The Falun Gong has an estimated following of 100 million worldwide, and its leader, Li Hongzhi, has been living in the United States since 1995.

Middle School teacher Al Whitted experienced violence first-hand during a recent trip to China. Whitted, a follower of the Falun Gong movement which practices compassion and tolerance, traveled with a group from North Carolina to Beijing and participated in a protest against Chinese oppression. Whitted and members of his group were roughed up by police, arrested and jailed until deported the next day.

What's wrong with that, you might ask. It may seem like a good way to live, not something that should get you jailed, beaten or killed.

"How can people be murdered for that, beaten for that?" Whitted asks.

But Whitted, a teacher at Woodlawn Middle School in Mebane and a follower of the Falun Gong movement, was arrested and roughed up by Chinese police in Tiananmen Square in Beijing for his beliefs.

Whitted was one of a group of five North Carolinians who joined other Americans in traveling to Beijing in February to protest oppression of those who adhere to the Chinese movement. People from 15 countries tried to highlight the oppression of Falun Gong [practitioners].

After three days in a Beijing hotel, the group went to Tiananmen Square with other foreign protesters. They intended to hold up banners and speak to the Chinese people.

It didn't work. When they arrived in the square on Feb. 14, every other person there was a policeman. The group tried to unfurl a banner at 2 p.m., Whitted said. By 2:01, the banner had come down.

Whitted was struck in the back of the legs by a foot or a police baton in an attempt to take his feet out from under him. People were given busted lips and blows to the face. The group was arrested.
"We didn't struggle," he said. "We don't fight back. We just try to tell people the truth."

The group was taken to a police station, where they were kept without food, water or sleep for nearly 24 hours. Fearing torture, they locked their arms tightly together so no one could be separated from the group.

Meanwhile, friends and family in the United States waited and worried without a way to contact anyone in the group. They had asked friends to contact the U.S. Consulate if they lost contact with them on the 14th.

At 10 a.m. the next day, the group was forcibly pulled apart, put on a bus and immediately deported.

Though most Chinese never knew the foreigners had come to support them, Whitted still thinks it was worth it for the attention it has brought to the movement in this country.

The Associated Press covered the Americans' trip and a CNN camera crew was waiting when they got off the plane in Detroit.

He says he would go back if it's safe.

Whitted, who has taught at Woodlawn for two years, picked up on Falun Gong when he saw a group practicing the exercises in Durham. He says he had long been a fan of Chinese history, tai chi and martial arts. He and other Falun Gong practitioners meet in Duke Gardens in Durham.

Falun Gong is a traditional Chinese spiritual discipline that includes exercise and meditation. Its principles include truth, compassion, and tolerance.

The practice began in China in 1992 and quickly spread by word of mouth throughout China and then beyond. Falun Gong officials say it is practiced by more than 100 million people in 40 countries.

To protest the Jiang regime's persecution of Falun Gong practitioners and the new "Shoot on Sight" and "Kill Without Mercy" orders, about 100 Canadian Falun Gong Practitioners decided to hold a 36-hour hunger strike petition in front of the Canadian parliament beginning March 13, 2002.

March 13, 2002 was the first day. At 9:00 a.m., the first batch of hunger-striking practitioners arrived. At 11:00 am, the second batch of over 50 practitioners arrived. In the early Spring cold wind, the practitioners sat on the remaining ice, practiced and sent forth righteous thoughts. Huge banners were displayed behind the practice site.

At 1:00 p.m., a press conference was held and Zenon read the hunger-strike statement. A total of 9 media, including Ottawa Citizens, Ottawa Sun, CTV, NewRO, CJOH, Ming Pao, and South China Morning post attended the press conference. Three members of parliament came to support the practitioners. Two other members sent supporting letters.

At 1:45 p.m., a representative of the practitioners delivered a letter to the Prime Minister's Office urging the Canadian government and Canadian people to pay attention to the Jiang regime's bloody persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. The office staff accepted the letter.

Zhongshi Electronic News March 13 report: Falun Gong practitioners have filed a case against Zhao Zhifei, the director of Hubei Province Police Bureau in a U.S. court. They also sued Zhou Yongkang, party secretary of Sichuan Province; Liu Qi, Beijing City mayor; and Xia Deren, deputy party secretary of Liaoning Province, for allegedly ordering the violation of human rights, torture and death of Falun Gong practitioners in China. The Chinese government was so irritated that it recently asked the Bush administration to help stop the suits. U.S. officials responded they were powerless to do so.
